Album Review

Released in 2009, How to Train Your Dragon is British composer John Powell's third consecutive animation score, following Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Bolt. With his use of bagpipes, fiddles, pennywhistles, and a military marching band, Powell incorporates a Celtic theme throughout the 25 classical instrumentals and vocal pieces, which include the emotionally stirring "Test Drive," the new age-influenced "Forbidden Friendship," and "Sticks and Stones," a track recorded by Sigur Rós' frontman Jónsi. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

Best of the year

Why do people always leave reviews of the film under the soundtrack? This is the best score of 2010 so far, it worked so well in the film and translates into a really strong listening experience on album. Truly joyous music. Fav tracks would be this is berk, forbidden friendship, test drive and battling the green death. Quality all the way through though. 5 stars

A Journey not to be Missed!

From fire breathing orchestration to the gentle, gliding sound of the fiddle, John Powells soundtrack to the Dream Works 3D motion picture, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ dares to explore to the farthest depths of the legendary dragon world. Not only does it perfectly match the movies rollercoaster ride as we follow the heart felt story of ‘Hiccup’ and his dragon companion ‘Toothless’, the music takes you on a journey of its own, capturing the complete realm of genres, from action to comedy, to romance and beyond! The reoccurring motif played by a range of instruments throughout the whole soundtrack, successfully bind all the different tracks together which, overall creates an immensely strong and powerful movie soundtrack that en-captures audiences of both young and old. John Powell, after many years in the film music industry has finally managed to paint his masterpiece. ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is defiantly a soundtrack not to be missed and soars high above reality with a magical 5 stars!
