Album Review
Lovers of ragtime piano will not want to miss this gem of a two-disc set, which for the first time gathers performances of all known compositions by the great rag composer James Scott. Though his reputation is overshadowed by those of his contemporaries Joseph Lamb and, especially, Scott Joplin — and though many details of his biography and personal life remain obscure — this collection should convince any listener of Scott's prodigious talent and significance as an American composer. His compositions tend to be a bit more energetic and physically demanding than Joplin's, though they are no less elegant; gems like "Frog Legs Rag" and "Dixie Dimples" stand easily with the best work of both Joplin and Lamb. The waltzes, of which he wrote a significant number, are no less charming, and his few published songs are also presented here, though sadly they are not sung (complete lyrics are provided in the set's extensive liner notes). Guido Nielsen plays with all of the wit and grace one could ask, and the production is of high quality. Very highly recommended.
