A great live studio recording from the best dance band on the planet!

This is a great album. Even if you haven't heard LCD Soundsystem before you'll find this album extremely enjoyable if you are a fan of dance music that uses real instruments as well as the best that technologoly has to offer.

These guys are ahead of thier time. In the same way that certain great bands from the sixties and seventies never made much of an impact on the charts then but are legends today - that's the way I feel about LCD Soundsystem's music. I consider James Murphy to be one of the best modern song writers we have today and am constantly surprised at how many people know their songs when the hear them but never know who it is that's singing. In twenty or thirty years time I can picture these guys being considered legendary.

They're are at their peak, fresh out of touring when recording these songs and have a great live sound. You'lll notice yourself picking up little sounds you never noticed on previous hearings with each fesh listen. To me, when a band can accomplish that, they have mastered their art.

Ii highly recomend this album to new and old fans and to those who who dare avoid the top 40 charts and are searching for a great album that's captured great band at their peak. Go on, buy it - you won't be dissapointed!

More great James Murphy music

A very fine album! I think this recording often provides a more organic sound than the original recordings, closer to that of the live gigs. The tracks keep their charm but are different enough to provide a unique take on the LCD Soundsystem sound. Provides a fresh and exciting, highly satisfying listen to a selection of LCD Soundsystem tracks released over the past five years or so.

LCD Soundsystem - The London Sessions (2011 LP)

LCD Soundsystem are pretty rad.

If you have any interest in this release then you are most likely aware of this fact. A live release, after all, is not the kind of album one normally cuts their teeth on when discovering a band. Although, LCD Soundsystem is such an anomaly for a live dance act - their recordings are amazing yet they can effortlessly rise above the studio sound for an exhilarating show with full use of live instrumentation – that if there was ever a time to do so, it might be now.

The London Sessions is a collection of songs spanning all three LCD studio albums. It’s not your typical live album though, it was recorded at a London radio station in June 2010 and doesn’t feature any of the usual applause associated with live recordings.

“Daft Punk is Playing at My House” (from the band’s self-titled debut) is an early highlight, you’ve got to check out the insane cow-belling and the infectious chorus - “You’ve gotta set ‘em up, woo-hoo, yeah!”. Tracks from Sound of Silver include the ace “Get Innocuous” featuring some astounding synth work, and “All My Friends” which has such a laid back groove you want to find your closest mates and sing along with James Murphy.

The tracks from last year’s This Is Happening that made the cut are “All I Want”, “Drunk Girls” and “Pow Pow” – the latter of which is another instant favourite with its svelte guitar work and adlib lyrics to match the surroundings. A random B-side titled “Your City” is thrown in for good measure; it’s a crazy good track which I hadn’t heard before and definitely worth acquainting yourself with.

There is only a small blemish on the album and it comes from one of the better tracks off This Is Happening - “I Can Change”. The echo effect on the vocals doesn’t quite hit the mark and leaves the song sounding a bit lifeless.

Otherwise, I can’t fault the release and it is perfectly timed considering the band is currently touring Australia as part of the Big Day Out. A highly recommended listen, especially for anyone that has been lucky enough to catch the band live recently, or is about to.

Yep, LCD Soundsystem are pretty rad.

Biography

Formed: New York, NY

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s, '10s

LCD Soundsystem debuted with "Losing My Edge," a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous p*****g contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was there at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label.
