Then he got a call from someone in Preston saying “I found it!”
I’ve been looking for this album for years and it’s great to finally find it on iTunes. Back in the late 80’s when the Painters were at their frenetic peak, this album (their first) didn’t seem to capture the energy of their live act. But now an old groupie from the mosh pit can listen to it with a new gratification and remembered admiration. Anthems like “Mohawk Baby” and “Basia” represent the more polished side of the band with Chris O’Connor on vocals and Dave Pace leading the horn section. While Paul Stewart gives vent to giddy puerile abuse on tracks like “You’re Suss” and “Hole of My Love”. Add “In My Mind” and “The Boy Who...” and you’ve got at least six great tracks. If you can overlook the lame artwork, album title and title track (what were they on?) you’ll find the music of a Melbourne band that was a lot of fun to watch, listen to and dance to.
Not the real album
I have a copy of this album on Vinyl and after downloading it became suspicious as many of the songs had different arrangments, guitar parts etc and the singing sounded off. I suspect this is not in fact the real Painters & Dockers.
Songs from my youth. Now, where's the rest?
What a great local Melbourne band. I absolutely loved going nuts at their live shows, which were so full of energy. It's great to find their songs on iTunes. Some real 'dockers classics but where are the rest... like "Kill, kill, kill" and "Nude school" etc? Bring on the rest of the Painters and Dockers Catalogue...
