Customer Reviews
Excellent
One of the best Australian albums in years. Gotye has crafted a masterpiece, surpassing his previous effort 'Like Drawing Blood', which was already one of the top ten albums of the last decade. The album opens with the excellent 'Easy Way Out', which leads into the song of 2011 'Somebody I Used to Know' then on to the first single, 'Eyes Wide Open'. The album rides an emotional curve, starting with introspection and a level of lament, then moving into a more optimistic frame of mind with up-tempo pop tunes 'I Feel Better' and 'In Your Light' - both of which would make many better known pop musicians envious with their 'impossible not to dance to' vibe. The album then shifts into it's most triumphant segment. The last third showcases Gotye at his absolute best. 'State of the Art', a tribute to an old electronic synthesiser, is simply an amazing song, and it's so outside the box it will take many by surprise. Some will question why Gotye would distort his beautiful voice, but the fact that he has taken this risk and pulled it off by creating such an excellent and interesting track speaks volumes about the abilities of the artist. 'Don't Worry, We'll Be Watching You' is a dark, sketchy track that you can feel under your skin and almost threatens to go dubstep. 'Giving Me a Chance' once again highlights Gotye's ability to write tracks that immediately form soundtracks to your memories, then 'Save Me' takes it to another level again with it's African chant style chorus. And after all this, we are left with the hauntingly beautiful 'Bronte', a powerful ending that perfectly captures the mood after rolling through such a gamut of emotions.
The thing that elevates Gotye's music above others is his ability to make everything feel so easy and intimate. You immediately feel a connection with these tracks, like they are speaking directly to you, as if you are in conversation with Gotye himself. It's these qualities that made many people form such strong connections with 'Like Drawing Blood', and they are even more evident in 'Making Mirrors'. This is an album many will hold close to their hearts for a very long time.
In a time where the music scene is dominated by similar sounding artists and disposable pop tracks, it's the genuine musical craftsmen and women that remind us of what music can be and how it can take you to another world. Gotye is a master of this and deserves to be considered alongside the world's top recording artists. We need genuine originals like Gotye. 'Making Mirrors' reminds us why that is.
Making Mirrors - Album of The Year!
This is such an amazing album, a more poppy and yet more mature move from Like Drawing Blood. This album will be extremely popular as "Somebody That I Used To Know" has become HUGE due to celebrity endorsements via social media like Twitter and Facebook and is now being played, many months after being played on JJJ, on commercial radio and people will buy this simply because that song is on this album. If you're one of these people you should also check out Gotye's other releases as they are all amazing and should not be left unlisted to if you really want to know Wally's cross-genre talent. Anyway, back to Making Mirrors… Besides this being an amazing album, containing a single which will be #1 on JJJ's Hottest 100, this deluxe edition is great; for an extra $6 you get 6 videos (including that of Somebody That I Used To Know) and 2 extra tracks which includes a remix of that very same single. Basically if you're here for the one and only single then you will love this release as you'll get it, a remix of it and the music video for it and then you get the rest of the album which is amazing and will hopefully open your eyes to the wonderful world of Gotye, and if you're here coz you, like me, already love Gotye then you know what I'm on about and you will love this album by the amazingly talented Wally De Backer. This man deserves all of the praise and accolades that he receives and it's great to see that he's finally being noticed for his talent and as a formidable force in the Australian and international music industry. 10/10 - 5 STARS!
Amazing...
This is kind of amazing. I like how it's quite different to Like Drawing Blood, but still very 'Gotye'. The best tracks are "I Feel Better" and "Dig Your Own Hole". Somebody That I Used to Know is also great, but I've been hearing it at least once a day lately on the radio, so it's nice to finally have something different :)
