Album of the year so far...
Best thing Melissa ever did was to go out on her own. This is one of those albums that doesn't necessarily jump out at you on first listen like her debut did, but at the same time something commands you to listen again right away... and then again, and again - in its entirety.
Standout tracks are OOOM, Isis Speaks, Lead Horse (a fantastic instrumental), Follow The Map, Meet Me On the Darkside. But the last 3 tracks (The Key, The One, 1,000 Years) are frigging awesome and only leave you wanting more. No lovey-dovey "I've lost my man and want him back" songwriting here, these have substance.
She hasn't gone for the deliberately hard sound this time around, she has more of a story to tell than to simply sound rock and polished. Her voice seems to have changed, taking on an almost Eartha-Kitt like sound on some tracks and one can't help but think that this is the real Melissa Auf der Maur without influence from record labels or those simply wanting to cash in.
After listening to Hole's latest, Nobody's Daughter, Courtney ain't got a patch on this girl. She can sing, she plays a wicked bass and damn, she can write.
