Customer Reviews

Sade's "Soldier of Love" the first great song of the decade, a modern masterpiece!

I heard this as a promo for Season 6 of "Lost" and fell in love with it instantly. After buying it, and listening to the lyrics carefully, I love it even more. An instant classic! Great moody atmospheric sound, it already has over 60 plays on my iPod. Can't wait for the album!!!

Left field from Sade

If you are an unapologetic Sade fan and have followed her music from the early 80's, you might find the song "Soldier of Love" too much of a paradigm shift for your mental musical imprint that is [or has been] - 'Sade'. The rich, meandering river of heart, soul and life experience; the unabating resonance of her voice and lyrics; the ever lopey bass guitar; and the distinctive band line-up contributions, are all missing here. The first listen resulted in confusion & disappointment. Whilst her last album 'Lovers Rock' was a step down from her earlier albums' heights, "Soldier of Love" is a step away from her 'roots'. Heavily engineered, a militaristic tattoo beat and over-worked 'electro-cello' stride alongside a pseudo-'Ho' chorus chant. Sade's voice seems disparate and somehow misplaced in this setting. Her lyrics - "It's a wild, wild west - I'm doing my best (to survive)", perhaps have a literal meaning. At a crossroads, this is a very different Sade, and I'll have to wait for the album to decide if I'll take this new turn with her. Whilst change may be the only true constant in life, this new direction for Sade seems to be - change for change's sake.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

When singer Sade and her band of the same name were establishing themselves, their record company, Epic, made a point of printing "Pronounced Shar-day" on the record labels of their releases. Soon enough, the music had no problem with the correct pronunciation. With the breakthrough Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten single "Smooth Operator" propelling the debut Sade album, Diamond Life, to the same spot on the Billboard 200 chart in 1985, the band fast came to epitomize soulful, adult-oriented, sophisti-pop....
