Album Review

For his fourth album, Australian singer/songwriter Pete Murray built his own studio at his country house and produced himself for the first time. Often, this is a recipe for grandiose failure of the Brian Wilson in the sandbox variety, but if Summer at Eureka has any major faults, it's that Murray perhaps didn't expand his reach enough. Taken individually, the 12 songs here are low-key but appealing AAA folk-rock, equally at home in comparison to the '70s singer/songwriters and contemporaries like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Jason Mraz. Taken as a whole, though, the lack of variety in Murray's songwriting and the uninventive arrangements make the album a bit of a slog to get through in a single sitting. Even the addition of Darren Middleton of Aussie rockers Powderfinger providing a more muscular guitar sound to about a third of the tracks, including first single "You Pick Me Up" — the album's spirited melodic high point "Miss Cold" and the unexpectedly funky, organ-driven album-closing rocker "Slack" only help a bit, by making the sameness of the remaining songs more obvious.

Instant Classic

Wow. Definately the best Pete album yet. "Chance to Say Goodbye" is a very well crafted song. The upbeat verses and mellow chorus with meaningful lyrics about Pete's father add great depth to this song. The harmonica in "Saving Grace" is beautiful and adds something special to an already brilliant song. One of his best. "Silver Cloud" is another slower song with catchy lyrics. The backing vocals in the chorus give the song a heavenly feel. The one minute intro in "Sugar" gets you moving with the funky bass line and drum beat and sets up the song as a fun and happy one. One of my faves. "Never Let the End Begin" is another well arranged song. The lyrics reflect the happy state Pete was in when he wrote the album. The chorus is enough to get anyone singing along. The title track, "Summer At Eureka", is another classis acoustic tune which has made Pete so popular. The ending line has perfection written all over it and leaves the listener smiling. "Happy Ground" finishes what is an ecclectic mix of songs and does not fail to hold the standard of the others. The sing-a-long chorus will get everyone joining in just as Pete's friends and family do in the actual song. All in all, the album in one of the best to come out of Australia in recent years. An instant classic. Highly recommended for everyone to purchace.

Excellent album from an Aussie favourite

'Summer at Eureka' has a real homely kind of feeling - a real warmth to it that comes from Pete's smooth vocals and great lyrics... An album reminding you of good times and happy days. To me, this would be close to Pete's best album yet. At first listen, standouts would have to be 'Summer at Eureka' and 'Chance To Say Goodbye'... as well as 'Happy Ground' to put a smile on your face. Another excellent album from Pete - definitely well worth the wait and fully deserves the five stars.
