Customer Reviews
Highlights? No - a low act.
I am not going to review the historic selections of music in this collection, which surely stand on their own merits. What I feel I must do is alert potential buyers to the fact that Liberation is attempting to sell you a shoddy, second-rate package at an vastly inflated price.
This "highlights" package throws together some (and only some) of the better recorded moments from the 1973 and 1974 Sunbury Festivals, but does a pretty poor job of representing these historic events. The old 1991 2-CD Mushroom "Mid Price Masters" edition of the historic 1973 Sunbury recordings is long out of print and should be released in full - why is it not available? Surely Mr Gudinski has a copy on the shelf somewhere? But since that important document currently unavailable to iTunes customers, I am moved to ask: "Is half a loaf better than none?" In this case, the answer is a resounding "No!".
My first bone of contention is the outrageous price - a punishing AU$45 for the equivalent of two discs' worth of music .. music that was recorded live, outdoors, under pretty basic conditions, and which (in the case of Disc 1) at a festival that took place nearly FORTY YEARS AGO. This is WAAAAY too much to pay, folks. My second major beef is the disgraceful audio quality on Disc 2. Listen to the preview of track 2, Disc 2 - The Dingoes' "Pay Day Again" - obviously, shamelessly, mastered from an old LP, surface noise and all. Ten years after its first release on CD and nearly forty years after the event, there has evidently still been no attempt by Liberation to either locate the original masters, or at the least, to take a few minutes to apply some basic noise reduction technology and give us a product that is acceptable in its sound quality. Clearly this digital download has been hastily ripped from the 2002 CD release, which suffered from the same problem. This cheapskate behavior was annoying enough when this album was first released on CD, but for it to be allowed to have persisted onto iTunes is nothing short of scandalous. For this reason alone I exhort potential buyers to boycott this album and punish Liberation for their laziness and their obvious contempt for the consumer.

I would love to review the album, as I was enticed to the site by a link on an iTunes receipt - it was shown there for $23.99. Ok, a bit pricey I thought for a 40 year old live concert, probably with only average sound, but nevertheless I clicked the further link to purchase it and, lo and behold, it must have reverted to the Australian site because the price is now $44.99. !! Good one iTunes, ripping off the Australian customer again. Yeah about double the US price is par for the course over here. Must be the long distance download cost eh or maybe just more of your price gouging. Is it because we didn't suffer a recession during the GFC bought about by USA bank greed, or is it just good ol' American capitalism at work. No wonder the super rich give so much to charity over there, getting older and hoping to build up some afterlife credits or just relieve the guilt a tad.
