Album Review

Right about the time that The Sting came out and ragtime went through a renaissance, there were many examples of classically trained pianists recording rags. Roger Shields, who wrote the very informative and extensive liner notes to this LP, also comes from the classical music world, but has a real feel for the vintage songs. He performs a wide-ranging set of music on this obscure but valuable LP, including Tom Turpin's "Harlem Rag," three numbers by Scott Joplin, and compositions by Charles Hunter, Joseph Lamb, Artie Matthews, James Scott, Robert Hampton, George Gershwin ("Rialto Ripples"), Luckey Roberts, James Reese Europe ("Castle House Rag") and Eubie Blake ("Troublesome Ivories"). An excellent recording that hits on some of the high points of the ragtime era.
