Album Review

This import collection highlights the band's formative years on the independent IRS label. Though it lacks the alternate mixes that spurred completists to purchase 1988's Eponymous, this set offers a more detailed picture of the band's early days, when they sounded more pastoral than pastiche. There is nothing here that can't be found on the original IRS albums, which are all worth purchasing, but this set is still recommended for casual listeners interested in owning just one R.E.M. disc from this creatively fertile period.

...and now for a completely different jangle

Most people are aware of REMs most popular songs - Losing My Religion, Imitation of Life, Get Up, Nightswimming, etc. These songs fill stadiums and were collected on their second Best-of 'In Time'. These popular songs came from their hugely successful period whilst signed to Warners, and represent a fairly dynamic shift from an earlier time where they were relatively unknown to the mainstream music community. What most people don't know, is that REM kick-started and spearheaded the alternative music movement in the United States during the 1980s. The term 'College-rock' might as well have been coined for REM. 'The Best of REM' is a collection of (mostly) pre-1990 singles that are both critically applauded and regarded as some of the most important alternative music created. From politically driven 'Radio Free Europe' and the touching 'Cuyahoga' these songs are instantly recognisable as REM, and not just for the jangley arpeggios, but also the passion and belief they infuse in their music. This is a fantastic overview of REMs early years, but also a must for anyone who thinks their life begun at Shiny Happy People.

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
