Album Review

Kate Bush's first album, The Kick Inside, released when the singer/songwriter was only 19 years old (but featuring some songs written at 15 and recorded at 16), is her most unabashedly romantic, the sound of an impressionable and highly precocious teenager spreading her wings for the first time. The centerpiece is "Wuthering Heights," which was a hit everywhere except the United States (and propelled the Emily Brontë novel back onto the best-seller lists in England), but there is a lot else here to enjoy: The disturbing "Man with the Child in His Eyes," the catchy rocker "James and the Cold Gun," and "Feel It," an early manifestation of Bush's explorations of sexual experience in song, which would culminate with "Hounds of Love." As those familiar with the latter well know, she would do better work in the future, but this is still a mightily impressive debut.

Customer Reviews

The sound of another time...

This album seems to capture the poignancy of younger years...sadness, longing and a compelling emerging energy marks Kate's early music here. Her compositions are original, elusive and provocative - elements that would become the trademarks that her devoted listeners have since become addicted to. A poetic and very unique first album from an extremely talented musician.

Really very good

There are some beautiful songs here: if your budget's limited, then download "The Saxophone Song" and "Oh To Be in Love". And "Wuthering Heights", of course. "James and the Cold Gun" is a rocker; not really her genre, so not recommended. "Feel It" and "L'amour..." aren't very good, either.

Best Debut Release Ever!

What can one say about Kate Bush? One of the last true music originals, Kate Bush is a music icon, having influenced everyone from Coldplay to Britney Spears, Lily Allen to Darren Hayes. She is on equal par with the Beatles as being one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and her debut album The Kick Inside is a perfect example of Bush's extraordinary talent - from the unforgettable Wuthering Heights, to the beautiful The Man With The Child In Eyes, Bush also tackled many taboo subjects, still deemed very mature by today's standards, like Strange Phenomena, Room For The Life and The Kick Inside. The Kick Inside album is the perfect starting point to anyone who has just been introduced to the genius that is Kate Bush.

One of the most successful and popular solo female performers to come out of England during the last several decades of the 20th century, Kate Bush was also one of the most unusual, with her keening vocals and unusually literate and complex body of songs. As a girl, Catherine Bush studied piano and violin while attending the St. Joseph's Convent Grammar School in Abbey Wood in South London. She also amused herself playing an organ in the barn behind her parents' house. By the time she was a teenager,...
