great voice, maybe songwriting could be a bit better, there a lot of earnestness but doesn't seem to say anything. thought they were australian, sounds like paul kelly, not as good.

Half way through the first rotation and it is very very good indeed.

What can I say, I really like this band. Saw them play live last year in Melbourne and they blew me away with their charisma and enjoyment that get out of playing their music, which you definately feel all the way through this album. They are such talented & mature song smiths. Anyway this album has a blue grassy touch to it, some more folky parts, which is a delight to hear. For me they are one of the best bands getting around, and this album just shows how solid they are.

More Decemberists Brilliance

The Decemberists have featured heavily in my listening since I first heard them in 2005. Their talent for beautifully crafted, narrative rich, lyrics create compelling scenes in the mind's eye. Colin Malloy's voice, their use of varied instruments and guest singers give them a sound that is instantly recognisable, but always fresh.

With this release The Decemberists have maintained their high standards with a set of well crafted songs that once more capture something essential and human. There are overtones of country in the whole album, with some fiddle-heavy tracks like All Arise! and Rox In the Box really carrying the theme. The characters, like Eli the Barrow Boy, from earlier albums such as Picaresque. complex stories of The Crane Wife, like The Perfect Crime No.2, and the fantastical extravaganza of The Hazards of Love, have been replaced with more reflective, possibly introspective, songs.

Fans of the band will love it, while for people who have just found them The King is Dead is a great introduction to one of the great American bands. Highly recommended.

Led by Montana native Colin Meloy, the Decemberists craft theatrical, hyper-literate pop songs that draw heavily from late-'60s British folk acts like Fairport Convention and Pentangle and the early-'80s college rock grandeur of the Waterboys and R.E.M. The band's initial lineup also included drummer Ezra Holbrook, bassist Nate Query, keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk. Frontman Meloy had previously devoted some time to an alternative country group before...
