Album Review

The debut album from Australia's the Waifs is a more than adequate stab at troubadour folk and acoustic pop. "Gillian," with a similar structure and tone to Texas legend Townes Van Zandt, exemplifies how basic harmonies and deft lyrics can put a smile on many faces. Donna Simpson and her lush voice on "Sunflower Man" are stellar, particularly with the addition of harmonica and mandola. In some instances, the band is guilty of what can be termed funk folk, a style all too often used with little to no benefit on a tune such as "Jealousy." A few styles are dabbled in, with positive end results. "Crazy Train" is similar to Jimmie Rodgers, while the quirky yet amusing "Billy Jones" has few flaws. There is also a rawness and moodiness, but the band obviously doesn't take themselves too seriously, if "Waif Song" is any indication. An extremely engaging and entertaining affair.

AN AWESOME AUSSIE TRIO

I had to write this review because the "expert" review is flawed. This is the debut album of a band that has achieved a great following because of their unique chemistry. This band has the amazing ability to beautifully capture the circumstances of a situation be it an emotion spinout or a gorgeous natural experience. No fancy over production, REAL, HONEST, HEARTFELT music with 2 fantastic vocalists and a guitarist who is one of my favorite players ever. Jealousy, the song the "stock" reviewer baggs is an absolute classic, not only DOES IT WORK it does so with a brilliant lyric, heart-on-the-sleeve vocals and some beautiful playing by Josh. This alone would be the best $1.69 you have ever spent in your life.

Surprised Waifs are not on top 10 downloaded...

The first time I heard the Waifs it was when my mum bought "A Brief History" and I didn't know any of the song's names, just the lyrics! Now, with the purchase of my iPod and the discovery of iTunes, I have found they have a lot more albums than I thought! My favourite songs on "The Waifs" would be "Waif Song" for one, and "Billy Jones". These are also my all-time favourite Waifs songs. But what happened to them? After the release of their 50 000 000 000th album (exaggeration...) they toured and dissapeared! I demand a comeback!!!
