Album Review
A winner of Australian Idol, Wes Carr stole the show by producing more than the standard set of "vocals and nothing more." Carr has experience as a singer/songwriter and a club performer, and those experiences come to the forefront in The Way the World Looks. The core of his sound here is a fairly simple pop/rock one, but the influences come out quickly and noticeably. It's those influences, as well as Carr's own additions, that lead to an extremely catchy overall result. Carr's vocals are mildly grainy, but with enough clarity to hold the lighter choruses. The styles involved are what really shifts from song to song here, from an opening track with a ragtime sound to a Springsteen-esque "Feels Like Whoa" right after it. Carr can write off-kilter pop pieces in the vein of Maroon 5 (as in "Fearless" and "Stay Awake") or simple acoustic tropical pieces in the vein of Jack Johnson (as in "Hurricanes"). He can put together simple piano ballads (as in "Light Years") or over the top affairs (as in "When We Were Kings"). By the time he gets to a dance track near the end of the album ("You"), the listener has long stopped being surprised by the stylistic jumps. However, Carr keeps his performance quality consistent throughout the mix, and keeps the quality of composition generally consistent (there are a couple of drops in lyrical goodness here and there, but that's to be expected from a first-timer out of a talent show). He's certainly got a way to go before he can be seen as more than a guy from an Idol competition, but Carr is a lot farther down that road than most idols will ever be. The Way The World Looks To Wes Carr
When I first saw a gorgeous blonde haired Wes on my television screen auditioning for Australian Idol with Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower, I decided immediately that he had something extraordinary to offer the world. It was a little surreal really, but from that first moment Wes has just captivated, surprised and excited me every time I see or hear him sing. Watching him on Idol was not like watching someone compete in a karaoke competition, but rather as though I was watching someone so consumed by music, that they were simply having the time of their life each and every week. It couldn't have been any clearer to me that Wes was born to entertain and create incredible music, and nothing was going to stop him living his dream. Prior to The Way The World Looks, I was already mesmerised by Wes' folky, bluesy music and beautiful, husky, storytelling vocal tones. Every song he wrote was refreshingly honest, felt like a little snapshot of himself, and invoked a feeling of nostalgia. Listening to Wes was like listening to a collection of old favourite songs...comfortable, familiar, warm, inviting...and timeless. The Way The World Looks is an extension of all of those stories of yester year, and he still makes me feel like I am listening to my best friend sing to me. Like he is personally telling me his story and taking me to all the places he has been emotionally over the years. It is another collection of songs that feels like all your old favourites, still as timeless and familiar as ever. A record that is deeply infused with all of Wes' influences through the years, Feels Like Woah channels his inner Bruce Springsteen, and there are elements of classic eighties and nineties rock songs through the entire record. Wes' great loves - the blues-rock sounds of the sixties and seventies - artists like The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Elton John and Joe Cocker - are also very evident in this record especially in songs like Love Is An Animal, Hurricanes, Stay Awake and Any Other Way. Wes Carr is an amazing songwriter and this record is a stunning entrance onto the world music stage and the first part of his story - a story which is not about to end any time soon. This is how the world looks to Wes...and there is no doubt for this incredibly talented man who is undeniably only getting better and better, the world is looking pretty spectacular and the future very bright.
Perfect!
This is a beautifully put together album. People on itunes have commented about the similarities between Matchbox 20 and Wes Car's song "Feels Like Woah", but I have to say compared with the digital rubbish that Lady Gaga presents to the world, this song along with the rest is both heartfelt and you can be rest assured that if you went to see them at a concert you would get your monies worth, (it would be them belting out the tunes and not just lip syncing). Great Work!
