Album Review

Two years in the making, This Is Happening is LCD Soundsystem’s third — and rumored to be final — proper studio album. Although it is led by the rowdy rave-up rocker “Drunk Girls,” electronics dominate the set, as heard in the chaotic “One Touch,” the left-field synth pop of “I Can Change,” and the placid “Somebody’s Calling Me.”

I

If you haven't heard any of LCD Soundsystems music, this is as good a place to start as any. It is exceedingly rare that you can pick any album from an artists catalogue and find something to like. Right now, the tracks all i want and I can change are almost permanently on repeat. A fantastic multi layered masterpiece and a fitting way for LCD soundsystem finish up...Brilliant!

Eno, Talking Heads and Bowie Homage.

I know this got a big writeup on Pitchfork, but after a couple of listens it is not really groundbreaking, and in many places is a pretty straight lift of much of Bowie's Berlin era albums mixed up with Eno and Talking Heads. There is also a lot of Krautrock influence that has been done before. It's a good album but not the huge scores that fan sites like Pitchfork hand out.

Album Of The Year!

This the last LCD Soundsystem is brilliant easily albu of the year. This Is Happening suffers no shortage of really great songs. Each track is a well-executed study in the finer points of the long form, each thumping and building, wavering and shifting in the haze of its own self-contained ecosystem. This is Definitely Happening for James Murphy!

A self-effacing spoof of the outrageous p*****g contests that often occur whenever music geeks cross paths ("I was there at the first Can show in Cologne," etc.) laid over a puttering electronic beat with the occasional bursts of discoid clatter, the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Several magazines...
