Album Review
Faded '60s icon and former Little River Band singer John Farnham managed to reinvent himself as an '80s pop star on Whispering Jack. This album was immensely popular in Australia, and both it and the first single "You're the Voice" sat at the top of the charts for many weeks. Whispering Jack was an album of slick, commercial synth-pop and from that point of view it was near perfect. Lyrically, though, it was lightweight, and Farnham's voice often sounded strained, particularly in its upper register. "You're the Voice" (complete with bagpipe solo) is the obvious highlight of this set. It became an instant classic, and is the song this album is most remembered for, even though "Pressure Down" and "A Touch of Paradise" also became hit singles. The rest of the album is standard '80s commercial pop, although on a couple of tracks Farnham moves into more of a straight rock territory ("Love to Shine," "Let Me Out") with mixed results. Farnham's career took off following this album, although his limitations as a singer were definitely exposed. [A '20th Anniversary Edition' CD/DVD of the album was released in 2006.]

Please Ignore the Limitations of the nameless Itunes Reviewer. Whispering Jack was the Number One album on the Australian Charts for a record 25 weeks in 1986. You're The Voice is John Farnham signature song. The 10 songs that make up Whispering Jack were Produced by Ross Fraser and Musical Director & Academy Award Winner David Hirschfelder. Iconic Aussie album and artist
The "Album Review" above should be completely ignored, and the sales stats and iconic status of this Aussie legend, his ability to outsell most people in the Australian market place, coupled with his extreme longevity in an ever changing industry should be what are focussed on!!
John Farnham couldn't show show "strain" or have ANY sort of "vocal limitations" if he tried and anyone can plainly hear that when the man opens his mouth....
His vocal range is unparalleled, his staying power, and hit after hit on every album he puts out are testament to that!
EVERYONE should own a copy if this album, and most in Australia do! "Jack", the NEW album by John Farnham will be out Oct 15, 2010. I suggest you have a listen to it and see why this man STILL sell records any and every time he releases.
great aussie album
This is a great aussie album,the only thing missing here is the great 12" mix of "Pressure down" song.
