Description
The Greater Blue Mountains region of New South Wales is Australia’s most accessible wilderness, an area of more than 1.03 million hectares spread between 60 and 180kms from Sydney.
In 2000, it was put on the World Heritage list and in 2008 was declared one of Australia’s National Landscapes.
The region is a diverse mix of temperate rainforest, native forest and heathland; rugged sandstone cliffs, deep canyons, towering waterfalls and ancient cave systems. It supports more than 100 of the world's eucalypt species and over 400 kinds of vertebrates, including mammals, birds and reptiles.
The Greater Blue Mountains region contains seven National Parks and is home to six Aboriginal language groups – the Wiradjuri, Gundungurra, Dharawal, Dharruk, Darkinjung and Wanaruah.
It boasts fine dining, hotels, galleries, shopping and attractions to match any in regional Australia. Yet nowhere is the visitor more than a few minutes from the primeval landscape – truly a place where civilisation meets wilderness.
