Biography

Born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1949, Daryl Braithwaite became one of Australia's most successful pop singers, both as a solo act and with the band Sherbet. Braithwaite moved to Sydney in the mid-'60s and sang in a number of bands before joining Sherbet in 1970. Between 1970 and Sherbet's demise in 1983, Braithwaite enjoyed huge success, both with the band and with a number of solo single releases. Following the breakup of Sherbet, Braithwaite left the music industry for a number of years. This period saw him working, for a time, as a labourer on a council road gang. In 1988, however, Braithwaite returned to music when he signed with CBS/Sony and released Edge. Featuring four hit singles (including the Australian number one "As the Days Go By"), Edge became a huge success and was followed in 1991 by the triple-platinum Rise. Rise became Braithwaite's second number one album in as many releases and gave him only his second solo number one single since 1974 with "The Horses."

Braithwaite returned in 1993 to find that his audience had deserted him. Taste the Salt was a flop, selling less than 30,000 copies. A best-of collection, gathering songs from 1988 to 1994, was released in late 1994.
