Publisher Description

'Day after day my life was consumed by killings, distress and gruesome sites, each one adding another piece to an ever-growing mosaic that seemed to be made up of bloodied disposable gloves, plastic bags and human waste. . ." When Esther McKay, an idealistic young constable with the NSW police, entered the tough, male-dominated world of forensic investigation, she was determined to hold her own. She soon found herself at deeply confronting crime scenes, often working alone and without supervision. After years of long, lonely, exhausting days and nights, and following a particularly harrowing high-profile case involving the disappearance of two young boys, Esther had a break-down and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. This is Esther's story. Powerful, moving and unforgettable, Crime Scene takes us inside the life of a forensic investigator, and reveals as never before the extraordinary demands and dangers of forensic work.

Truly encapsulating - the horrors of doing a job

Thank you to Esther for sharing her story. It has shown me the similar horrors my son is experiencing doing the same job. I commend your hard work and wish you a peaceful and happy time in the future.

Crime scene

Fabulous book, can't put it down, notwithstanding some distressing reading. A must read for anyone considering a career as a police officer, particularly women. Hopefully the dinosaurs who believe women shouldn't be there, unless they are doing the filing, have retired or left.

Police Chaplain

Crime Scene is a gritty account of real police taskings, and conveys truth about the misfiring culture of hierarchy that pervades policing, and which unwittingly breaks its own. Esther’s account does not just describe real and horrific community events, but tells the story of a modern day dedicated honest human being who has used these experiences to make a real difference to others. The spirit that underpins this work is incredible, brave, and contagious.
