- 2. "Feel So Sad (Reprise)" by Spacemen 3: "Everyone feels sad sometimes, and this song is amazing when you feel like being sad."
- 3. "Kimberly Austin" by Porno for Pyros: "Listen to it, and you will realise why it’s so good. A psychedelic love song with vocal echoes and harmonies. A real sweet song. "
- 4. "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen: "An obvious great, judging by how many people have covered this song. Cohen has so many classics, but this is his legacy to the world, and it’s a better place because of it."
- 5. "Aneurysm" by Nirvana: "I loved this song in high school and covered it in my high school band. It takes me back to that place where music was an exciting new world that I wanted to absorb myself in: sharing it with friends and taking on the world."
- 6. "Sing Me Spanish Techno" by The New Pornographers: "A totally infectious tune from Vancouver’s supergroup. Twin Cinema is a classic album, and Neko Case is the icing on the cake."
- 7. "Waiting All Day" by Silverchair: "This hidden gem from Young Modern ticks all the boxes for me and is among Silverchair’s finest moments."
- 8. "Panasonic Youth" by The Dillinger Escape Plan: "After a five-year gap following their debut, DEP came back with an absolute monster of a record in Miss Machine. Thankfully Ire Works and Option Paralysis followed and were equally impressive. This is how metal should be, and boy it’s really scary!"
- 9. "Cowboys" by Portishead: "Beth Gibbons spins daily in my world, and this opening track from Portishead’s self-titled sophomore record kicks things off perfectly. I’m praying there’s not another 11-year wait between albums!"
- 10. "My Own Bare Hands" by Ween: "Ween truly are eclectic and are at their best when penning devilishly dirty, trashy rock numbers like this ditty."
- 11. "Sloop John B." by The Beach Boys: "Such great forward momentum, amazing harmonies and arrangement. Not as “clever”, I guess, as a lot on Pet Sounds, but just the epitome of great pop structuring. Drums in on the second verse … the best trick in the book! I think perhaps a lot of us have stolen that ol’ chestnut for our own music once or twice before."
- 12. "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" by Jimmy Ruffin: "I love Motown and anything that carries a similar weight. This song is probably my favourite of the bunch. It’s perfect. It’s so beautiful and intelligent, and the groove is everything you want in a Motown classic. I really love the string movements and key changes. Brilliant."
- 13. "Dancing In the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen: "Bruce is the man. I don’t care if you don’t like him. Whoever writes a song like this deserves the utmost respect. I love the lyrics: such an amazing congruency between words and music. Just one of those really dark and powerful songs we all wish we could write."
- 14. "Chopin Funeral March" by J A Forster: "Cinematic-sounding music is a close second to great pop songwriting. I could listen to the atmospheric passages of this classic piece everyday and not tire of it. The space and looming weight are devastatingly awesome. If this didn’t inspire Darth Vader’s theme, then it was going to be the sonic backdrop for some other creepy space villain. What’s interesting is the really colourful and almost positive counterpoint between these dark spaces … really clever."
- 15. "Roads" by Portishead: "I’m a sucker for melancholic music, and it doesn’t get sadder than this. You call it sad; I call it pretty! Such a beautiful lyrical examination floating on absolutely weightless trip-hop. A voice like Beth Gibbons’ can only be earned by living a real life. I love how heavy and powerful artists can be without using big loud guitars and drums. This song is a great example of that."
- 17. "Kingdom of Rust" by Doves: "My favourite Doves track. It has a killer shuffle and equally killer chorus."
- 18. "Great Expectations" by Elbow: "It’s such a sweet, brooding song that will make anyone miss someone."
- 19. "Boy With a Coin" by Iron & Wine: "This song has a whole mantra, harmony thing going on. Super soft, super organic."
- 20. "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke: "His voice here is stunning. He sings like he’s lived a hundred times and is still looking for something."
- 21. "The Girl You Lost to Cocaine" by Sia: "Really dig this gal. This song has an awesome sense of groove that makes me want to get down."
- 22. "Dead End Friends" by Them Crooked Vultures: "My fave track off this record. It’s a fearless riff that sounds like it was born on a desert highway in the back seat of your dad’s muscle car."

Great eclectic blend
Really enjoyed listening to this diverse blend of music, heard things new and oldies that I had forgotten about but had to have. Thanks
NICE WORK
KILLER PLAYLIST. REAL DIVERSITY ACROSS THE GREATS.
NIRVANA DESTROYS IT, BEACH BOYS BALANCE IT, AND THE 'BOSS' COMPLETES IT! (ALTHOUGH I CONTEND THAT 'THE RIVER' IS HIS MOST SEMINAL WORK - BUT 'DANCING IN THE DARK IS STILL GENIUS).
