    • 1. "In a Sentimental Mood" by John Coltrane & Duke Ellington: "Jazz is my wind-down music. It sets the tone for perfect relaxation for me. "In a Sentimental Mood" was my husband’s and my wedding song and our first dance as husband and wife. Perfect for dancing slow and close. The opening melody played on the keys is so beautiful and peaceful. The laid-back tempo is perfection. Jazz helps me unwind from a long, hard day or week and helps me get out of my own head, stepping into a world of music outside of my own. I often put it on after leaving my own studio sessions."
    • 2. "Ne Me Quitte Pas" by Nina Simone: "I immediately hear Nina’s voice and get sucked into the raw emotion and the haunting pain in her voice. The way it quivers, shakes, and breaks is beyond moving to me. Just goes to show that through music, there are no language barriers to feeling something great. I love that music has the ability to unite, cross boundaries and connect on a universal level. The lyrics are gorgeous as well (I once had them translated for me). I love pain in music. It’s honest and real. The song’s desperation and the longing in Nina’s voice are magical and beautifully haunting."
    • 3. "Feeling Good" by Nina Simone: "I love the hope in the message of this song. This song, for me, represents the moment where the light at the end of the tunnel reveals itself or we pick ourselves up after a moment of difficulty in life. It’s the feeling of hopefulness and empowered strength that comes along with being in that moment. To me it also represents being grateful and seeing all the beauty life has to offer through coming out of darkness."
    • 4. "At Last" by Etta James: "This is the song that made me fall in love with the great Miss Etta James. As soon as the strings arrive and Etta’s silky, soulful voice glides onto the recording, everything in life just makes sense."
    • 5. "Something's Got a Hold On Me" by Etta James: "I love the soulful, churchy feel of this record. The dramatic gospel intro build is so inspiring. Makes you want to dive right in and join the excitement. This song now holds extra-special meaning to me, as I was able to interpret it in the upcoming movie Burlesque, in which I star. It was so much fun and a dream come true to sing a song in a film that I’d grown up listening to, loving and merely dreaming about. A fantasy come to life."
    • 8. "Breathe Me" by Sia: "The sigh at the beginning of the song is genius. Sia’s voice is perfection. All the inflections, quiet harmonies and air she delivers on the notes are in a league of their own. Beginning the song with the words "Help, I have done it again" is both brave and empowering. One of my favourite vocalists. Sia is amazing on this album. I am a big fan."
    • 9. "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails: "I love the eerie feel of this record combined with the raw sexuality that it’s driven by. Makes me want to break out of my cage and do unexplainable things. I love the unapologetic honesty of it all, which some would find offensive. Its irreverence is genius, and I love all the musical elements. Going out on a piano solo after all the heavy weightiness of sound is haunting and beautiful."
    • 10. "Firestarter" by The Prodigy: "As soon as the first beat drops on this record, you know something epic is about to happen. This song slaps me across the face and immediately grabs my attention. As soon as I heard this song at 15, I knew I was in for a ride. I was a Prodigy fan from then on, and this song was a part of the inspiration for the later ‘Bionic.’ The aggressiveness on the vocal tone is amazing, and the way he delivers the line ‘I’m the baker, taste it’ is unparalleled genius. Love that line!"
    • 11. "99 Problems" by Jay-Z: "Yes! I love Jay-Z best live! The song’s aggressive nature makes me feel like he’s live in the room. Makes me wanna throw my middle fingers up and rebel."
    • 12. "'Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do (Single Version)" by Billie Holiday: "This song sums it up in a nutshell. I love the premise of this song and the gritty, sassy nonchalant way in which she delivers it. Although you can still tell the last stanza of the song was written by a man, and the song could do without it, it’s still one of my faves."
    • 13. "Prelude / The Sound of Music" by Julie Andrews: "This song represents freedom for me. It was the first music to move me and spark a dream. This was my form of escape at a very early age and a very chaotic time in my life. It was my release for pain and a sanctuary from feeling unsafe."
    • 14. "Stay Awake" by Julie Andrews: "My favourite all-time lulaby. I sing this song to my son, Max, before bed. Her voice couldn’t be more gorgeous and soothing."
    • 15. "Moonlight Sonata" by Ludwig van Beethoven: "I can only imagine what this song must have felt like while writing it. As soon as I hear the first few chords of this piece, I go into a trance and am taken very far away. I’m so inspired while listening to this song, and it holds childhood memories for me. My mother used to play it when I was young, and it was one of the first classical songs I learned while studying piano at an early age. (I’m so sad I didn’t continue those lessons.)"
    • 16. "Ain't No Way" by Aretha Franklin: "I am blown away by this vocal. It’s beyond. The effortless way in which these notes are reached is unbelievable, and the emotion moves me deeply. Remarkable performance."
    • 17. "Everything In Its Right Place" by Radiohead: "I love the mood of this song. Its complexity — with all the different sounds coming at you yet harmoniously blending at the same time — is genius to me. Always a favourite of mine. It’s an escape song for me."
    • 18. "November Rain" by Guns N' Roses: "I love this song. It brings back memories for me, and I couldn’t stop watching the music video! It was great! Slash with his cigarette dangling out of his mouth, his top hat and guitar in the middle of the desert, and the wedding scene — classic!"
    • 19. "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin: "Classic genius. I love the hard beat against the intensity of the guitar melody combined with the orchestration. Pure greatness at its best."
    • 20. "Creep" by Radiohead: "As soon as the song begins, I connect with it. I love how the mood changes throughout. It’s sad and courageous at the same time. Simple and strong. Wishful thinking at its best."
    • 21. "Come to Me" by Björk: "When I hear this song, I drift off into my own world. An ultimate daydream song. I wish it were longer. Her enchanting voice, the delicately simple piano and the haunting strings are gorgeous. I love the production, and the lyrics are beautiful."
    • 22. "It's Oh So Quiet" by Björk: "Such a lovely and playful song. I love the sweet innocence turned boisterous unabashed joy as her vocals splash all over the record! I got to sing this song live once and enjoyed screaming the WOW-POWs in pure Björk fashion!"

wooha!

i've never been a "fan" of C.A until i heard "you lost me" from her latest Bionic album. not for anything other than the pure talent in her voice in that track. i have been interested in her music since she has come of age and grown up and become a mum. what a gem she has turned out to be. this playlist is so amazingly diverse. what an extraordinary woman to compile this group of tracks. obviously there are some influences there from her vocal training and upbringing but more interestingly, a few gems that she has found on her journey thru life. from nina simone to the prodigy??? i'm more of a prodigy girl but i can help but respect the range in taste of genre. i just checked how many songs i had in my library of her playlist and to my surprise i have 13 out of 15 (gulp) julie andrews is the only artist missing but i admit to her mary poppins album but its a childhood thing! Sia's "breathe me" is soooo intensely coool. love her paylist!!!!!!!
