Early Marc Bolan comes to mind when you first hear Devendra Banhart's softly quivering lamb-of-pop voice, though it's Bolan wrapped in a whisper, which somehow intensifies the impact. Folksy, bluesy, rural, and never less than hypnotic, Barnhart's music pushes the limits a man can explore armed with little more than a guitar and a pocketful of poetry, especially on delicate, lean tracks like "This Is The Way" from 2004's Rejoicing in the Hands. On 2007's Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, recorded in his rural L.A. home-studio, he enriched his stripped-down mix with greater-than-usual instrumentation (check out the funky groove of "Lover") and continued that trend with 2009's excellent (if not so rambling) What Will Be Will Be — soak up the laid-back loveliness of "Angelika" and "Baby." Here's one shamanic-neo-hippy under whose spell we'll gladly fall any day of the week.
