  • The Basics

Melbourne-based, NZ-raised band of brothers Evermore — Jon Hume (guitar/vocals), Peter Hume (bass/keyboards), Dann Hume (drums) — have spent the first decade of their existence, which happens to be the first decade of the millennium, adding equal measures of ambition and talent to a solid raft of influences (notably Muse and Radiohead), and have become one of the most dynamic outfits among the current crop of globe-trotting, stadium-ready crowd-pleasers. Let's kick off with their signature tunes so far: heart-fluttering 2004 single "It's Too Late," the gently soaring "Light Surrounding You," and the ever-addictive "Hey Boys and Girls (Truth of the World Pt.2)." And there's more truth from Evermore, in Next Steps.

  • Next Steps

Not merely content to inspire us with their glittering, skyscraping vapor trail of expansive post-millennial rock, Evermore took the bold artistic decision to cut loose with a concept album — 2009's Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show — which explores politics and the media in the age of YouTube. Check out "Front Page Story/Diamonds in the River" for a taste of that project, then plug into a live version of "Real Life" to discover just how brilliantly the band translates its super-tight studio presence to an audience. Their relaxed, stripped-back cover of soul classic "Stand By Me" was performed at 2006's Make Poverty History Concert.

Weaned on their parents' Led Zep record collection (their moniker is a nod to "The Battle of Evermore"), the Brothers Hume won talent contest Rockquest in 2000, built their own studio with the prize money, and haven't looked back. Calling-card tracks "Oil & Water" and "Slipping Away" preceded debut studio album Dreams (2004), produced by Nirvana/Foo Fighters collaborator Barrett Jones, which established the band as a force in warm, bright, horizon-spanning rock. They followed it up with 2006's Real Life, containing the band's first chart-topping single, the soul-lifting "Light Surrounding You" (penned by drummer, Dann). Having hinted early on they wanted to make a concept album, the band duly delivered with 2009's Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show. Watch this space: feels like the Evermore story has only just begun.
