As fashionable as freak-folk is these days, there's no denying Sam Beam's status as one of indie rock's original guitar-toting troubadours. With vocals that unravel like the whispers of a long-lost lover and riffs that trickle like rain off tin roofs, Beam's Iron & Wine songs are so beautiful they're debilitating — whether they're lulling a listener to sleep or unearthing memories that were better left buried. Not every song is as spare and spooky as "Naked As We Came" and "Upward Over the Mountain," though; as the steady handclaps and temple-thumping drums of "Boy With a Coin" prove, Beam's ready to tackle mid-tempo rock tracks as well.

We can't blame you for picturing Iron & Wine as a lonesome cabin-dweller who hasn't seen the sun, or a proper shave, in weeks, maybe even months — what with way tracks like "Bird Stealing Bread" take on a drifter-in-the-dark tone. Yet Sam Beam's collaborated with such indie-rock icons as Calexico and the Shins: the stunning indie-pop ballad ("New Slang"), a creepy, crawly Dylan cover ("Dark Eyes"), and a county tune that's tailor made for riding off into the sunset ("History of Lovers"). An accordion-backed Lollapalooza '06 rendition of "Jezebel" also reveals what he's like onstage, leading spellbound concert-goers through a labyrinth of hypnotic hooks and melodies.

The beard is the first thing that comes to mind. Thicker than chimney smoke and as soft and scratchy as the sides of a sponge, it brings to mind blustery winters, weathered and wise souls, and writing by candlelight. Which is perfect, really, given the timeless and strikingly tender nature of Sam Beam's actual songs, from the soft-focus snapshots of his bedroom-bred debut, The Creek Drank the Cradle, to the fuller, richer studio arrangements of Our Endless Numbered Days, and The Shepherd's Dog. As for his popular, synth-free cover of the Postal Service's "Such Great Heights," it's been used in everything from a confectionary commercial to the Garden State soundtrack, thanks to its ragged, Southern Gothic edge and tear duct-tapping vibe. Yes, his songs are that good.
