Jeff Beck's comfort zone has never been dictated by genre. Ever the innovator, he recorded the instrumental jazz fusion album Blow by Blow (produced by George Martin) in 1975. The next year he collaborated with former Mahavishnu Orchestra keyboardist Jan Hammer on Wired, another skirmish with the forces of fusion — "Led Boots" pits the bass-boosted lightning jolts of Hammer's electric ivories against Beck's winged, spark-spitting sky serpent of a guitar . . . to incredible effect. When former Free and Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers recorded the GRAMMY®-destined Muddy Water Blues – A Tribute to Muddy Waters in the early '90s, he recruited a heavy-hitting cadre of axemen (Brian May, Gary Moore, Buddy Guy, et al.) among whom Beck is a standout — check out his serpentine string-slithers on "Good Morning Little School Girl, Pt. 1." Always something of a loose cannon with occasional reclusive tendencies, the insanely versatile Jeff Beck has unjustly been overshadowed by fellow axe legends Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix, perhaps because he drifted in and out of backing projects with the likes of Mick Jagger and Roger Waters, and never seemed to stand proud and monolithic in his own right. We hope this collection of his solo cuts — drawn from the era that followed his Yardbirds residency, but including his metal-foreshadowing blues with the Rod Stewart-fronted Jeff Beck Group — may help to set the record straight.
