If any of us were asked where we'd rather be, we'd almost all reply, "On the beach," presuming, of course, we weren't already there. If you can't get to the sand and the surf, we can at least supply you with the sounds. Many of the artists on this Essential coastal compilation fit together hand-in-glove, like Jack Johnson and his good mate Donavon Frankenreiter, or the Surfaris and Dick Dale and His Del-Tones. Others, not so much: When Cliff Richard sang, "Ooh this is fun" in "On the Beach" he could never have imagined the world of thong heralded by Sisqo. At least, we presume he couldn't . . .
