Performing at Sounds of Spring 2008

Brisbane's hotbed of sound gets even hotter in '08 with the arrival of the first ever Sounds of Spring Festival, featuring a lineup sure to nudge the city's molten core towards critical mass. Gyroscope has a gargantuan live reputation, which puts them on the top of our pile with the fearsome "Snakeskin," while Melbourne three-piece British India swaggers unapologetically into the frame with "I Said I'm Sorry," and the Herd makes its point with "The King Is Dead." Time for a pogo now, as the Spazzys — Kay, Lucy, and Ally — crank up the pop-punk with "Paco Doesn't Love Me" while the Black Seeds are on hand to slow it down to a mellow skank with "Sometimes Enough." Byron Bay's Parkway Drive is on hand to satisfy your hardcore tendencies with "Boneyards" from 2007's Horizons, and newcomers the Galvatrons continue to surf a mighty impressive wave of buzz on killer synth-pop fare like "When We Were Kids."

From the ashes of the discontinued Livid event comes Sounds of Spring, a brand new October festival primed to massage Brisbane's RNA Showgrounds into a chunky old lather. Two Thousand-eight's inaugural lineup features some of the land's most impressive live bands — including Rocket Science ("Sex Call") and Behind Crimson Eyes ('"Art of War") — and boasts a variety of sounds sure to keep everyone celebrating the joys of the season till summer hits its full stride. This batch of Essentials is fresher than a field full of daisies, more vital than a late October sunrise, and more invigorating than a dip in the spring surf — oh, yes, it's a steaming hot flagon of milk newly squeezed from rock's ever-generous udders . . . so go on, take a big swig.
