  • The Basics

If you're relatively new to the Jesus & Mary Chain, Scots lords of white noise, you'll most likely recognise "Just Like Honey" from the Lost in Translation soundtrack. Here, it's sitting (dirty) pretty — hollow, reverb-heavy drums and all — near the top of our selection from the band's best work, alongside other bubblegum-wrapped-in-barbed-wire classics, including the skeletal surf guitars of "Head On," and the pedal-to-the-metal death wish of "Rollercoaster." Not done getting blissfully pummelled yet? Succumb to our Next Steps, then.

Few bands have taken rock 'n' roll to sublime heights, while shaking its very foundations, quite like the Jesus & Mary Chain — just stand "I Love Rock 'N' Roll," with its tight and transcendent layers of brass and guitar, next to a delirious chainsaw massacre like "Taste the Floor," and the originality of the band's vision starts to come into focus. Some tracks deliver a maelstrom of fuzz-toned feedback and nihilistic noise, others drift on by like little, fluffy — and somewhat sinister — clouds . . . and some do both at the same time. Genius.

Forget Phil Spector's Wall of Sound for a second — we're still busy recovering from the Wall of Noise the Jesus & Mary Chain built out of sandpapery yet satisfying feedback way back in 1984 (debut single "Upside Down"). Jim and William Reid (and a rotating cast of collaborators, including future Primal Scream founder Bobby Gillespie) made the Top 40 realm safe for singles with enough grit and gunk to make you reach for a towel. So, the next time you put on a My Bloody Valentine or Dinosaur Jr. album, be sure to thank the Brothers Reid. After splitting in '99, the band reunited in 2007.
