Long after the term "bubblegum" was used as a tag for throwaway (often highly enjoyable) pop, along come the Waifs with a warm, intimate brand of folk-rock that they like to call "wholemeal." Songwriter and guitarist Josh Cunningham first met up with Donna and Vicky in '92, creating the entity we now know and love as the Waifs, and the trio quickly set about burning up road miles on the Oz gig circuit. Although the Waifs' big break came after the turn of the millennium, early work confirms the spark and simple charm of great tunes, beautifully arranged. "Gillian" is a standout on the band's 1996 self-titled debut, while the follow-up, Shelter Me, delivers the compelling narrative of "The River," with its affecting slashes of mournful violin.

Any folk-rock trio that gets the thumbs-up from Bob Dylan (the Great One invited the Waifs to tour with him in 2003) must be worth its salt, and these tracks capture the vitality and talents of sisters Donna and Vikki Simpson, and their cohort in melody, Josh Cunningham. The Dylan tour slot pleased the outfit to no end, because they started out as a Dylan cover band called Colours. The band's line "You toast to your small town / When you drink the happy hour" (from "London Still") never fails to moisten the eyes of traveling, homesick Aussies the world over.
