  • Thirsty Merc came straight outta Dubbo in 2002, and took no time in confirming that a well-aimed set of combination punches — tight, fizzing rock voltage delivered by one hand, and clear-eyed emotional honesty by the other — makes for a pretty fantastic game plan. Rough-edged early tracks "Wasting Time" and "Emancipate Myself" would eventually be re-recorded for 2004's self-titled debut album (also featuring stand-out single "Someday, Someday"). For 2007's follow-up, Slideshows, guitarist Sean Carey stepped in following Matt Baker's resignation, and the retooled band, adding fresh polish to its sound via superb singles like "20 Good Reasons" and "The Hard Way." Oh, yeah, these chaps know where they're going . . . and where they're coming from: check out super-tight nods to Cold Chisel ("My Baby") and the Easybeats ("She's So Fine").
