ROGUE MOBSTER-Mark Silverman and Scott Deitche - May 24,2012 | When the infamous gangster Whitey Bulger went on the lam in 1995, the streets of Boston became a war zone between the Mafia and the renegades, with the Winter Hill Gang looking on. Rogue Mobster: The Untold Story of Mark Silverman and the New England Mafia chronicles the inside story of the Boston mob wars of the 1990’s when over two dozen gangsters were killed in a vicious war for control of the Boston underworld. Rogue Mobster is told in the words of Mark Silverman, an outsider from Medford who got inside the mob and became an integral part of the ensuing war. His account is the first-ever inside glimpse into what went on at the street level, why people were killed, and what the stakes were. Silverman grew up in the shadow of Whitey Bulger, Howie Winter, Raymond Patriarca and Jerry Anguilo, bosses of Boston’s most infamous crime families. With a Jewish last name, his opportunities should have been limited in Boston’s Irish/Italian underworld, but he moved up quickly, gaining acceptance across the board. Silverman was ‘made’ in the Patriarca Family as a reward for infiltrating a renegade mob faction backed by a New York family. The book begins with a unique history of the Boston gangland scene and takes the reader up to the late 1980’s,Silverman recounts the shifting alliances and friendships that were torn apart as the various mob factions battled for control of the Boston underworld through the early 2000’s. Rogue Mobster is a firsthand account of the violent Boston mob wars of the 1990s, when bodies were piling up across New England and Mark Silverman was walking a tightrope between Winter Hill and the Mafia. THE FRANK MATTHEWS STORY-Ron Chepsiuk and Al Profit - May 03,2012 | In the early 1970s, Frank Matthews became Americas biggest drug kingpin. His organization, headquartered in Brooklyn, stretched across more than 20 states, and he became the only Black gangster to establish direct ties to the French Connection heroin pipeline. After being indicted in 1973, he disappeared with 15-20 million dollars in drug profits, equivalent to roughly 100 million in todays cash. Despite one of the largest manhunts in US history, Frank Matthews hasnt been seen since. There is no proof of whether he is alive or dead. To quote the federal prosecutor assigned the Matthews case he "was a pioneering giant of drug distribution". His organization eventually outgrew even the Italian Mafia and when he built himself a mansion in Staten Islands most exclusive neighborhood (and across the street from Mafia boss Paul Castellano) he found himself on the verge of war with La Cosa Nostra. He also battled militant Black Muslims for control in the streets of New Jersey and Philadelphia as he built his empire. See the amazing true story of Frank Matthews rise to power as Americas biggest kingpin and how he escaped justice for nearly 40 years. WHEN SATAN WORE A CROSS-Fred Rosen - Apr 26,2012 | In 1980 in Toledo, Ohio—on one of the holiest days of the church calendar—the body of a nun was discovered in the sacristy of a hospital chapel. Seventy-one-year-old Sister Margaret Ann had been strangled and stabbed, her corpse arranged in a shameful and stomach-churning pose. But the polices most likely suspect was inexplicably released and the investigation was quietly buried. Despite damning evidence, Father Gerald Robinson went free. Twenty-three years later the priests name resurfaced in connection with a bizarre case of satanic ritual and abuse. It prompted investigators to exhume the remains of the slain nun in search of the proof left behind that would indelibly mark Father Robinson as Sister Margaret Anns killer: the sign of the Devil. When Satan Wore a Cross is a shocking true story of official cover-ups, madness, murder and lies—and of an unholy human monster who disguised himself in holy garb. HEAD SHOT-Burl Barer - Apr 19,2012 | In the mid-to-late 1980s, a quiet neighborhood near Tacoma, Washington was terrorized by the violence of three men: Paul St. Pierre, an alcoholic psychopath; his younger brother, Chris, who had committed unspeakable acts to be one of the boys; and Pauls childhood friend, druggie Andrew Webb. The three beat up one man before cutting his throat on a deserted beach. They decapitated another victim, whom Paul St. Pierre had killed, and buried his head in a bucket of concrete. Soon, the twisted triad turned on each other. St. Pierre shot Andrew Webb in the stomach during an argument. Chris St. Pierre called the cops. He and Webb, who survived his attack, were sentenced to life in prison. Paul St. Pierre choked to death alone in his jail cell. HEAD SHOT-Burl Barer | 18 4 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

SCAPEGOAT-THE CHINO HILLS MURDERS-J. Patrick O'Conner - Apr 12,2012 | In June 1983, Doug and Peggy Ryen, their ten-year-old daughter and a 11-year-old house guest were brutally murdered in Chino Hills, California. Two days before, Kevin Cooper had escaped from a nearby prison and hid in a vacant house 125 yards below the murdered familys hilltop house. After the San Bernardino Sheriffs Department established that he had ben there, it focused on him as the lone assailant despite numerous eyewitness reports that implicated three white men as the perpetrators. Kevin Cooper was convicted of the murders in 1985 and has been on Death Row at San Quentin since then. SCAPEGOAT shows how the sheriffs office and the District Attorneys office of San Bernardino County framed him for the horrific murders and how the justice system has failed him at almost every turn in his long, drawn-out appeal process. As OConners shocking but thorough investigation shows, the sheriffs department discarded information that pointed at other suspects, destroyed evidence that exculpated Cooper and planted evidence that implicated him. If it were not for a court-ordered moratorium on executions in California over the lethal injection controversy, Cooper-with no appeals remaining-would have been executed. BLOOD HIGHWAY-Sheila Johnson - Mar 15,2012 | On January 23, 2000, already battered by an ice storm, the rural Alabama resort town of Mentone was about to be struck by an even more terrfying freak catastrophe. Hurtling down the highway in a Lincoln Town Car was Hayward Bissell, a 400-pound madman on a murder rampage. Ramming the pickup truck of Don and Rhea Pirch, Bissell lured Don Pirch on to the road, running him down with his car. Bissell next targeted the home of James and Sue Pumphrey. After stabbing James Pumphrey in the stomach Bissell was thwarted by two family dogs, who gave their lives to protect their owners. Their sacrifice bought the Pumpreys enough time to get a gun and scare off Bissell-who didnt know the weapon was actually inoperable. When Bissell was finally stopped, police discovered that he wasnt alone. Occupying the passenger seat beside him was the mutilated, partially dismembered body of his pregnant girlfriend, Patricia Ann Booher. In February 2002, Bissell pled "guilty but insane" and was sent to prison for life. Was he really crazy? Or was he a psychopath trying to avoid a death sentence.. OBA CHANDLER AND THE MURDER OF THE ROGER'S FAMILY-Fred Shrum - Mar 01,2012 | On June 4, 1989, the bodies of Jo, Michelle, and Christe Rogers were found floating in the serene waters of Tampa Bay, Florida. They were stripped below the waist, bound, and tied to concrete blocks. They were going on vacation! It was a trip that may seem normal to some. But to the Rogers family, it was the trip of a lifetime. They were going to Florida to make some memories. But Florida would literally become a tourist trap for Jo, Michelle, and Christe. They would not make it home alive. The Rogers women were going to experience Florida in the classic fashion. They would color their days with beaches, attractions, and maybe even a visit to Mickey Mouse. This would be a welcome respite from their daily grind spent on a three-hundred-acre dairy farm in Ohio. They were determined to enjoy every moment. There were still no fresh leads by the spring of 1992. Moore decided to push harder with the media. He released information from a psychological profile that was prepared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The reward was raised to $25,000. Moore held press conferences and had the case featured on such national television shows as Unsolved Mysteries and Diabolical Minds: Case Studies. Something clicked this time. Jo Ann Steffey of Tampa was convinced that her neighbor was the killer. Police did not act on Steffeys tip initially but she was persistent and police finally made the arrest of Oba Chandler that year. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT-Brian McDonald - Jan 06,2012 | Now that Joshua Komisarjevsky has been sentenced to death we revisit my interview with author Brian McDonald as we discuss In The Middle Of The Night. The affluent suburb of Cheshire, Connecticut, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. William Petit and his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to raise their two lovely daughters… Until July 23, 2007, when, according to police, two ex-cons invaded the Petit home hoping to embark on a routine robbery—one that would ultimately prove deadly. What unfolded at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive was a tragic and horrifying sequence of events that shocked a community and made headlines across the nation. Before the morning was over, Mrs. Hawke-Petit and one of her daughters would be sexually assaulted, the entire house would go up in flames, and only Dr. Petit—his head bloodied, his legs bound—would manage to escape with his life. With the help of neighbors and local police, the two suspects were soon found and captured. EQUAL VERDICTS-THE LEX STREET MURDERS-Antonne M Jones - Dec 21,2011 | On December 28, 2000, the city of Philadelphia experienced the worst mass murder in its three hundred year history. Ten people were viciously gunned down in a dilapidated crack house in the Mill Creek section of West Philly. The community was scared and outraged. City officials demanded a swift resolution. Within days and under an avalanche of pressure, the police obtained a confession and the case was cracked. Four local young men were arrested and charged with seven counts of first degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, and related offenses. The District Attorney Office vowed to seek the death penalty for what appeared to be an open and shut case. After fifteen months of preparation, when the trial was less than three months away, the case took a major turn in an adverse direction. The whole world was watching and awaiting the prosecution team s next move. Equal Verdicts chronicles the investigation of the grisly slaying from the night of the murders until the conclusion of the case. The author interviewed suspects, lawyers, judges and reporters to get a first hand account of what really occurred during the proceedings. Exclusive police interrogations of the murderers, jailhouse snitches, and correction guards are recorded which adds mystery to the already petrifying saga. Ultimately, more shocking than the murders was the motive. "Most of my life I felt violated. Everything I loved was taken away from me. My mom, grandmother, father. My mothers boyfriend got killed right in front of me so I did the same thing. I never did anything to anyone who didnt deserve it. Besides, most of the people in that house were just junkies and drug dealers anyway." -Shihean Black Convicted Killer. EQUAL VERDICTS-THE LEX STREET MURDERS-Antonne M. BLOODSTAINS-H.H. HOLMES-Jeff Mudgett - Nov 18,2011 | Bloodstains is the startling tale of one man’s search for the truth after inheriting the personal diaries belonging to his great-great-grandfather who he discovers was America’s first and most notorious serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett. Better known by his alias H.H. Holmes, Mudgett was the mass murderer who struck terror into the nation by being the proprietor of the infamous Murder Castle and stalking the streets of Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair. During his incarceration awaiting execution, well over a century ago, Holmes admitted killing 27 innocent victims, but the evidence the author locates indicates hundreds more likely. From his investigation, Jeff Mudgett, the direct descendant, learns that Holmes’ reign of terror was worldwide and not limited to Chicago as has been so widely believed. Based upon never before revealed historical facts, Jeff pieces together a dynamic and extraordinary puzzle, including the strong possibility that Holmes was also Jack the Ripper. SILENT SCREAM-Yvonne Mason - Oct 13,2011 | It was a time of innocence, a time of hippies, flower children and the Age of Aquarius. A time when young people felt free to roam the countryside hitchhiking without fear. A time when law enforcement was trusted by the people they were sworn to protect and serve. That time was shattered by one of law enforcements own. His name was Gerard Schaefer. He was a former Florida Police officer who lied his way into the office of the Martin County Florida Sheriff’s Office. He used his lie to continue to perpetrate his crimes of torture and murder of young women who hitchhiked along Florida’s roads. Schaefer not only destroyed the lives of as many as 34 young women, he kept trophies of his kills, and he lived the crimes over and over again. He believed he was doing the world and his victims a justice by ridding the world of the “whores” who hitchhiked. Gerard Schaefer was a narcissistic psychopath who wanted his fifteen minutes of fame. THE SOURTOE COCKTAIL CLUB-Ron Franscell - Oct 05,2011 | Over the years, Ron Franscells books have earned high praise from bestselling authors such as Ann Rule and Vincent Bugliosi. He is the bestselling author of The Darkest Night. His writing has often been compared to Truman Capote. Ron grew up in Wyoming. A lifelong journalist, he worked for newspapers in Wyoming, New Mexico and Californias Bay Area before hitting the road in one of American journalisms best beats, covering the evolution of the American West as a senior writer for the Denver Post. Shortly after 9/11, he was dispatched by the Post to cover the Middle East during the first few months of the Afghan war. In 2004, he became the managing editor for the Beaumont (TX) Enterprise, where he covered the devastation of Hurricane Rita. After Rons divorce, he feared he was the link in a long chain of estranged fathers. But when the author and his teenage son embark on a road trip to the Yukon to seek out a macabre cocktail containing an amputated human toe, they unwittingly begin a journey into their own past, present and future. The Sourtoe Cocktail Club is a true-life love story about fathers and sons, set against epic backdrops and overlooked places. It is also a road book that attempts to answer, for one father and son, a pivotal life question: Where does the road go? THE SOURTOE COCKTAIL CLUB-Ron Franscell | 4 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

THE FATAL GIFT OF BEAUTY-THE TRIALS OF AMANDA KNOX-Nina Burl - Sep 29,2011 | The sexually violent murder of twenty-one-year-old British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, on the night of November 1, 2007, became an international sensation when one of Kercher’s housemates, twenty-year-old Seattle native Amanda Knox, as well as her Italian boyfriend and a troubled local man Knox said she “vaguely” knew, was arrested and charged with the murder. Award-winning author and journalist Nina Burleigh investigated the murder, the controversial prosecution, the conviction and twenty-six-year sentence of Knox, the machinations of Italian justice, and the underground depravity and clash of cultures in one of central -Italy’s most beloved cities. When Perugia authorities concluded that the murder was part of a dark, twisted rite—a “sex game”—led by the American with an uncanny resemblance to Perugia’s Madonna, they unleashed a media frenzy from Rome to London to New York and Seattle. The story drew an international cult obsessed with “Foxy Knoxy,” a pretty honor student on a junior year abroad, who either woke up one morning into a nightmare of superstition and misogyny—the dark side of Italy—or participated in something unspeakable. The Fatal Gift of Beauty is a compelling examination of an enduring mystery, an ancient, storied place, and a disquieting facet of Italian culture: an obsession with female eroticism. It is also an acute window into the minds and personalities of the accused killers and of the conservative Italian magistrate striving to make sense of an inexplicable act of evil. NOT CRIMINALLY RESPONSIBLE-TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE - Sep 15,2011 | In February, 2009, Guy Turcotte a cardiologist stabbed his two young children, Anne-Sophie, 3, and Olivier, 5, 46 times while they were lying in their beds. Turcotte admitted to the killings, but in the subsequent murder trial he claimed he could not recall carrying them out. The Guy Turcotte murder trial was one of the most closely followed in recent history in Canada — both horrifying and captivating the public. The jury deliberated for 5 days, deciding on the fate of the cardiologist charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his children Olivier and Anne-Sophie. The trial hinged on Turcotte’s state of mind at the time of the February 2009 slayings. Was he trying to get revenge on his estranged wife, a fellow doctor, for cheating on him with a mutual friend? Or was he a sick man who had lost all reason? Turcotte’s lawyers argued he had been rendered temporarily insane over the recent breakup of his marriage with Ms. Gaston. In the July verdict, a jury found he was “not criminally responsible” for his actions. In September, Turcotte faced a five-person mental health tribunal to determine whether he should be released, or whether he should be detained for another year. As the mental health tribunal decided whether to set Guy Turcotte free, hundreds of protesters gathered in 14 Quebec cities calling for an overhaul of the justice system. Crown prosecutors are seeking a retrial for Turcotte, arguing that the judge erred in law in his instructions to the jury. STRAIGHT FROM THE HOOD-Ron Chepsiuk and Scott Wilson - Aug 18,2011 | Many books have written about the black gangster. They have been, for the most part, lengthy tomes focusing on the kingpins of the gangland scene, gangsters with names like Nicky Barnes, Frank Lucas, Lorenzo Fat Cat Nichols and Kenneth Supreme McGiff. Yet there are many stories about the black gangster that have not received much press coverage or have simply been ignored or missed by the media. They indeed reveal a lot about the history of the hood. Straight from Hood is a compilation of some of those fascinating stories. You will find tales featuring drug kingpins, entertainers, hit men, street gangs, con men, corrupt cops and reformed gang bangers. Read about the most feared man in the entertainment industry, the love story between Fran, a former heroin addict, and David, a reformed gangster, both of whom have become celebrities; the unlikely alliance between an ambitious black gangster and a violent-indeed crazy-white Italian-American mobster; the terrorist plot involving a Chicago street gang, and more. Learn about Al Capones impact on Chicagos African American community and what Alcatraz has to do with Harlems most famous godfather? Why is Denzel Washington in this book? Who is a modern day desperado who died by the gun but managed to live on through rap music? How did a stick-up artist from Brooklyn become Hip-Hops answer to Lee Harvey Oswald? Each of the following stories are amazing and all of them true. STRAIGHT FROM THE HOOD-Ron Chepsiuk and Scott Wilson | 17 8 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

We can listen again and hear what was known at that time now that the verdict is in and Casey is a free woman. When news broke of 3-year-old Caylee Anthonys disappearance from her home in Florida in July 2008, there was a huge outpouring of sympathy across America. The search for Caylee made front-page headlines. There were disturbing questions raised about Caylees mother Casey and she became the prime suspect. In October, based on new evidence, her erractic behavior and lies and the signs of human decomposition found in the trunk of her car-a grand jury indicted the young single mother. THE LAST MEAL-Dennis Shere - Feb 24,2011 | It took almost 10 years for investigators to arrest two men for the brutal murders of seven workers in a fast-food restaurant in suburban Chicago. The tragic events captured headlines nationwide. When the arrests finally were made, the evidence against one man was virtually irrefutable. His DNA was found on chicken bones recovered from a trash bin at Brown's Chicken and Pasta; investigators contended that he ate pieces of chicken before killing the victims - the so-called "last meal." He confessed, indicating that he got "caught up in the moment" as he s**t the throat of one victim. If someone ever deserved the death sentence, he did.The Last Meal is the story of horrific crime. It is also the riveting account of how a team of defense attorneys fought to show how their client did not commit the killings, and what happened when that failed to save him from a death sentence. This true-crime story is unique as it is written from the perspective of the defense attorneys rather than the prosecutors. THE LAST MEAL-Dennis Shere | 23 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CHARLES MANSON NOW-Marlin Marynick - Feb 15,2011 | In November 1970, Charles Manson was sentenced to death for the horrifying and cold-blooded murders of seven people near Los Angeles. His sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment after California abolished its death penalty. At Manson's trial, lead prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi spun the story of a demonic cult leader who hypnotized people to commit murder. He published his theory in Helter Skelter, the bestselling true crime book of all time. When author Marlin Marynick was eight years old, he discovered a beat up copy of Helter Skelter. The book’s portrayal of Charles Manson as an icon of unbridled evil haunted Marynick for years, well into his career as a psychiatric nurse. So when a chance conversation with a man selling Manson memorabilia on the Internet facilitated a connection to Manson himself, Marynick went along for the ride. This happenstance journey introduced Marynick to Manson’s closest confidants, eager to share Manson’s story, his talent, his passion, and his philosophy. The adventure crescendoed through Marynick’s phone conversations with Manson and ultimately culminated when the two met behind the tightly locked doors of California's Corcoran State Prison. Charles Manson Now is a critical dissection of what happened forty-one years ago, when Manson family members stormed the Polanski estate and murdered five people, among them one of America’s most beautiful, beloved actresses, Sharon Tate. The book is also a collage of Manson’s own writing, a poetic, ironic, and disturbing account of his universe, from his childhood to his time in the 8x12 prison cell where he is condemned to stay forever. It is Charles Manson, uncensored, unedited, in his own words. CHARLES MANSON NOW-Marlin Marynick | 14 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

COLUMBINE- Dave Cullen - Feb 03,2011 | On April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold left an indelible stamp on the American psyche. Their plan was staggering: to blow up their school, surpass Oklahoma City in horror, and leave "a lasting impression on the world." The bombs failed. But the unprecedented attack unleashed a new era of violence in schools—branding every future shooting "another Columbine." When we think of Columbine, we think of the Trench Coat Mafia; Cassie Bernall, mistaken Columbine martyr; and Patrick Ireland, "the boy in the window"—the whole world watching his gutsy escape. Now, in a gripping work of journalism a full decade in the making, comes the story we never knew. In this revelatory book, Dave Cullen debunks the myths and produces a profile of teen killers that burrows to the core of psychopathology. He reveals two radically different killers: Eric Harris, the callously brutal mastermind, and Dylan Klebold, the quivering depressive who journaled obsessively about love and attended the Columbine prom three days before opening fire. Columbine unfolds seamlessly, in an unforgettable tale of two honor students with a healthy circle of friends, secretly stockpiling a cache of weapons in the basement. They recorded their vitriol on film while manipulating every adult who could have stopped them. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold left warnings all around them—described by Cullen with a sharp investigative eye and psychological acumen. Culling from hundreds of interviews, thousands of police files, testimony from world-class psychologists brought in by the FBI, and the boys' videos and journals, he delivers the first comprehensive account of the tragic Columbine school shooting. A riveting tale of murder, redemption, police cover-up, and a town torn apart—the haunting cautionary tale for our age. COLUMBINE-Dave Cullen | 2 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

THE KILLING OF LITTLE SHEPHERDS-Douglas Starr - Jan 27,2011 | A True Crime Story and The Birth of Forensic Science. Starr eloquently juxtaposes the crimes of French serial killer Joseph Vacher and the achievements of famed criminologist Dr. Alexandre Lacassagne during France's belle époque. From 1894 to 1897, Vacher is thought to have raped, killed, and mutilated at least 25 people, though he would confess to only 11 murders. Lacassagne, who headed the department of legal medicine at the university in Lyon, was a pioneer in crime scene analysis, body decomposition, and early profiling, and investigated suspicious deaths, all in an era when rural autopsies were often performed on the victim's dinner table. Lacassagne's contributions to the burgeoning field of forensic science, as well as the persistence of investigating magistrate Émile Fourquet, who connected crimes while crisscrossing the French countryside, eventually brought Vacher to justice. Vacher claimed insanity, which then (as now) was a vexed legal issue. Lacassagne proved the "systematic nature" of the crimes. Starr, codirector of Boston University's Center for Science and Medical Journalism, creates tension worthy of a thriller; in Lacassagne, he portrays a man determined to understand the "how" behind some of humanity's most depraved and perhaps take us one step closer to the "why." THE FRAMING OF MUMIA ABU-JAMAL and CRIME MAGAZINE-J. Patrick O'Conner - Jan 13,2011 | In this account of the trial of controversial death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal, O'Connor, editor and publisher of crimemagazine.com, clearly lays out his case that Abu-Jamal should receive at least a new trial, if not complete exoneration. O'Connor asserts that Abu-Jamal was framed for the 1981 murder of police officer Daniel Faulkner because of a vendetta by Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo and the police due to Abu-Jamal's defense, as a journalist, of the cultish countercultural group MOVE. Relying heavily on court transcripts and prior books on the case, O'Connor shows what he sees as the judge's bias, troubled relations between Abu-Jamal and his defense lawyer and dubious statements by various witnesses. Abu-Jamal was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death; later overturned, the sentence could still be reinstated pending a decision by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Now in the wake of Faulkner's widow's recent book alleging Abu-Jamal's guilt, it has made it more difficult to be swayed entirely by O'Connor's arguments, but he makes a strong case that the investigation into Faulkner's murder deserves another look. EVIL NEXT DOOR-Amanda Lamb - Jan 06,2011 | On May 21, 2002, twenty-three-year-old Raleigh, North Carolina resident Stephanie Bennett was found murdered in her apartment. Despite ample DNA evidence at the scene, investigators could find no matches in their criminal databases. Two years into the investigation, Detective Ken Copeland-known as "the garbage man" for leaving no stone unturned in his search for evidence-and his partner, Jackie Taylor, joined the case. After culling through the entire file with fresh eyes and re-interviewing witnesses, they re-released a description of a suspect neighbors had seen nearby, a man who'd once lived just next door to the murder scene. But the suspect refused to hand over a DNA sample, wiping down anything he touched, and even planting decoy samples. This is the gripping story of how a team of aggressive detectives doggedly tracked down a killer (under suspicion for a killing spree that investigators believe might have spanned years and crossed state lines)and brought closure to an innocent young woman's grieving family. LAW ENFORCEMENT AGAINST PROHIBITION-William Vandergraff - Dec 16,2010 | William Vandergraff began his career as a police officer in 1972. After 6 years of walking Main Street beats he graduated to detective, which he worked as most of his 29 years. He worked as Staff Sergeant and was in charge of Homicide, Major Crime and Street Gang Unit. He was also the Witness Protection Coordinator and a Hostage Negotiator. On Christmas Eve, 1987 Larry Fisher and Jon Waluk visited the home of Agnes Kirk-Kirton looking for her husband Terry. He escaped out the window but the men shot and killed the mother and her 2 small children. William assembled a squad of officers, Waluk was captured quickly and 2 days later Fisher was in custody. After extensive questioning the motive was discovered. Fisher did not want his girlfriend using drugs and the Kirtons were her heroin connection and Fisher infuriated that they had sold her the drugs. In the 90's 3 men were found savagely butchered in a home. 2 Los Bravos bikers were arrested. The motive was that 2 of the men were in competition for control of some prostitutes. The third man simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. 13 year-old Beeper Spence was out walking alone in a north-end neighborhood when he was gunned down by gang members, mistaken for a rival gang member. William became aware of L.E.A.P, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, a U.S. based group comprised of police officers, judges, prosecutors, prison officials and politicians from around the world who recognized that the prohibition of drugs was causing the very same crime problems that the alcohol prohibition had done early in the 20th century. William believes that the majority of murders he investigated could be attributed to the Prohibition on Drugs. William will discuss his career working in Homicide in Canada's murder capital and the work he now does with L.E.A.P. THE PROFILER-MY LIFE HUNTING SERIAL KILLERS AND PSYCHOPATHS-Pat Brown - Dec 04,2010 | In 1990, a young woman was strangled on a jogging path near the home of Pat Brown and her family. Brown suspected the young man who was renting a room in her house and quickly uncovered strong evidence that pointed to him-but the police dismissed her as merely a housewife with an overactive imagination. It would be six years before her former boarder would be brought in for questioning but the night Brown took action to solve the murder was the beginning of her life's work. Pat Brown is now of the nation's few female criminal profilers-a sleuth who assists police departments and victim's families by analyzing both physical and behavioral evidence to make the most scientific determination possible about who committed a crime. FREE JUAN RIVERA-Rob Warden - Nov 18,2010 | On Aug. 17, 1992, 11 year-old Holly Staker was baby-sitting a 5-year-old boy and his 2 1/2-year-old sister. After eating pizza, the boy went out to play. At 8 p.m., when a neighbor noticed he was still outside, the boy said he was locked out. The neighbor took the boy to his mother at her job at a nearby tavern. The mother, Dawn Engelbrecht contacted Holly's mother, and the two of them went to the apartment, where they found the 2 1/2-year-old girl unharmed but Holly was dead in a bedroom. She had been stabbed 27 times and brutally raped. In the days after the crime, Juan Rivera was jailed on an unrelated burglary charge. Another inmate told authorities that Rivera told him he knew who had killed Holly. Police focused on Rivera, then just a few days short of his 20th birthday. Ultimately, Rivera signed two confessions to the crimes. He later testified at a pretrial hearing that he was coerced into confessing and had nothing to do with the rape and murder. Engelbrecht, whose children Holly was baby-sitting, had initially told police after Rivera was arrested that he had approached her outside her apartment on the night of the crime and asked, "What's happening?" She later recanted that identification, however, and said she believed Rivera was not Holly's killer. In 1993 Rivera was sentenced to life in prison. That sentence and the conviction were set aside in 1996 by the Illinois Appellate Court, which ruled the judge in the case had made errors. In 2005 new DNA testing excluded Juan Rivera as the killer r****t prompting a third trial with Juan, his family, defense attorneys and supporters believing in his innocence, confident that Juan would finally be released. On May 8, 2009 Juan was convicted of Holly Staker's rape and murder yet again, even though DNA excluded him. Prosecutors cited Juan's confession as proof of his guilt. MURDER IN THE HIGH HIMILAYA-Jonathan Green - Nov 04,2010 | Cho Oyu Mountain lies 19 miles east of Mount Everest on the border between Tibet and Nepal. To the elite mountaineering community, it's known as the sixth highest mountain in the world. To Tibetans, Cho Oyu represents a gateway to freedom through a secret glacial path: the Nangpa La. On September 30, 2006, gunfire echoed through the thin air near Advance Base Camp on Cho Oyu and climbers preparing to summit watched in horror as Chinese border guards fired at a group of Tibetans fleeing to India, via Nepal. Murder in the High Himalaya is the unforgettable account of the brutal killing of Kelsang Namtso, a seventeen-year-old Tibetan nun fleeing with the group to Dharamsala to escape religious persecution. Kelsang's death is a painful example of Tibet's oppression by China, but this time a human rights atrocity was witnessed and documented by dozens of Western climbers. Their moral dilemma was plain-would they tell the world what they had seen? The center of the story is an American climber, struck with a crisis of conscience, who gambled with his career to speak out and a young, Tibetan girl who sacrificed her rights to ever return to Tibet by telling the Western media about the murder of her best friend. Both risked their futures to expose the abuses of China in Tibet and paid a terrible price. MURDER IN THE HIGH HIMILAYA-Jonathan Green | 3 11 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

True Murder-SERGEANT SMACK-Ron Chepesiuk - Sep 23,2010 | True crime author Ron Chepesiuk uncovers one of the biggest hoaxes in the history of the international drug trade in Sergeant Smack: The Legendary Lives and Times of Ike Atkinson, Kingpin, and his Band of Brothers. Sergeant Smack details the true legend of Ike Atkinson, one of the biggest Black drug traffickers in U.S. history. Atkinson pioneered some of the most innovative methods used in international drug smuggling. They ranged from duffle and AWOL bags, to the U.S. Army Postal System to the use of unsuspecting crew chiefs who operated military aircraft transporting teakwood furniture. But, contrary to popular belief, Atkinson's methods did not include the bogus cadaver-heroin smuggling connection conspiracy exploited by Frank Lucas in Hollywood 's blockbuster film, "American Gangster." The film not only distorted Atkinson's historical role in the international drug trade, but falsely depicted Lucas as the pioneer of the Asian heroin connection. As the book conclusively shows, the conspiracy is a hoax, as is Frank Lucas' claims of participation with Ike in the conspiracy. SERGEANT SMACK-Ron Chepesiuk | 22 9 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Very Best of True Murder-Through The Valley of the Shadow - Aug 26,2010 | For half a year, the man who came to be known as the Abbotsford killer terrorized the valley community. On Friday, Oct. 13, 1995, two teenage girls Tanya Smith, 16, and Misty Cockerill, 15 were attacked by Terry Driver in the heart of the city. Smith's body was found near the Vedder Canal. Driver had clubbed Cockerill seven times in the head with a baseball bat, but she managed to get to the nearby hospital to tell her story. The case was a bizarre cat and mouse game; the murderer taunted the public and the police by dumping a gravestone on a vehicle at a local radio station. The killer would call the station and police from local phone booths, saying he would kill again. People, women and girls in particular, deserted the streets at dusk, too afraid to be out on their own. Dozens of Abbotsford Police officers worked with the RCMP, tracking down the suspect. The case broke when two things happened: investigators found a complete fingerprint on an envelope that was with an item Driver had thrown into a window. The second was when Driver's own mother recognized his voice on tapes the police made public. Rod Gehl, a retired Abbotsford police inspector who took the first call from Driver back in 1995, will discuss his book on the case, called, Through the Valley of the Shadow: The Search for the Abbotsford Killer. | 25 8 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 27-The Very Best of True Murder-Slow Death - Jul 08,2010 | Beside New Mexico's Elephant Butte Lake stood a windowless trailer which owner David Parker Ray, 59, and his girlfriend Cynthia Hendy, 39, called The Toybox. A $100,000 homemade torture chamber, it was equipped with whips, chains, pulleys, straps, clamps, leg spreader bars, and surgical blades and saws. A camcorder stood next to the leather-padded torture table-set up to make 'snuff' videos-while a ceiling-mounted video monitor allowed female victims to see every excruciating detail of the agonies inflicted on them by their captors. "Never trust a chained captive", was one of the rules David Ray kept posted as a reminder to himself and his followers. It's truth was proven on March 22, 1999 when, after surviving a three-day torture orgy, Cyndi Vigil, 22, stabbed Hendy with an ice pick and escaped, clad only in a slave collar and padlocked chains. She told police that she'd been kidnapped, raped and tortured by Ray and Hendy. A second victim, Angie Montano, 27, came forward to describe how she'd survived a similar ordeal less than a month before. Satanist Ray was the center of a web of satanism, sex slavery and murder. His disciple, drifter Roy Yancy, confessed to strangling to death Marie Parker, 22, while Ray took photos. Ray's daughter Jesse, 31, was convicted of helping her father kidnap and torture Kelli Van Cleve, 22. Cynthia Hendy told authorities that Ray had killed 14 women. Police believe that he may have slain more than 60. SLOW DEATH-Author Jim Fielder | 7 7 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 20-RUNAWAY DEVIL-Robert Remington and Sherri Zickefoose - May 27,2010 | In April 2006, a twelve-year-old girl named JR committed a brutal crime that terrified parents everywhere: after weeks of plotting, she and her twenty-three-year-old boyfriend stabbed to death her mom, dad, and little brother in the family's home in Medicine Hat, Alberta, making her the youngest multiple killer in Canadian history. JR was a quiet honour-roll student living in the small Prairie town of Medicine Hat, Alberta. But her middle-class existence concealed an ominous alter ego: Runaway Devil. Her Internet persona professed a fondess for a darker world of death metal music, the goth subculture, and her love for the much older Jeremy Steinke, a high-school droupout living in a trailer park with his mother. When JR got involved with Jeremy, her concerned parents tried all the tough love strategies to restrain her and interrupt the relationship-to no avail. Was JR simply growing up too fast and under the spell of a Svengali-like Steinke? Or was she really the puppet master who manipulated her boyfriend to do her bidding? Based on the trials and exclusive interviews with the prosecutors, police, family and friends of the victim and murderers, RUNAWAY DEVIL gives the truth behind the shocking tragedy. # 11-Through The Valley of the Shadow: The Search for the Abbotsford Killer - Mar 25,2010 | For half a year, the man who came to be known as the Abbotsford killer terrorized the valley community. On Friday, Oct. 13, 1995, two teenage girls - Tanya Smith, 16, and Misty Cockerill, 15 - were attacked by Terry Driver in the heart of the city. | 24 3 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Great Program!!
I am an American living in Australia. I listen to this program on my morning and evening commute. The topics are always fascinating. As with the case of True Crime authors it can be hit and miss. Some authors I simply had trouble listening to as I felt they were sensationalists and full of opinion rather than facts. That is I suppose is the issue with this genre of books. That being said, it's really great and the host Dan does an excellent job of asking the appropriate questions to unravel the stories to the audience. This show is well done, but I agree with the below reviewer. The audio quality at times can be quite poor. I'm assuming that because it's mostly phone interviews the quality will never be consistant but I believe some investment in sound editing equipment would make this show appear more professional. At times I have to turn the volume up loud to hear the authors only to be scared out of my wits when Dan starts talking or interjects. Sound quality aside, this show deserves a growing audience. It should be a must "hear" for everyone who enjoys learning about true crime stories. Fantastic show, I suggest you listen. Lets hope the sound issue will be addressed soon.
Could be 5 stars
