Podcast Description
The Dice of Doom podcast is a lively discussion about role-playing games, focusing heavily on Dungeons & Dragons, Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer along with many other gaming systems. We have been gaming for longer than we care to freely admit and we have a wide range of interests and experiences in gaming in general (everything from obscure games printed in the 1980's to the most recent tabletop wargames). We like to take a lighthearted approach to our discussions and mix them up with other nerdy news and content as well.

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 036: Eclipse Phase, Screwing Characters, Tragedy, Ecology and Dwarven Women’s Grooming Habits | As means of a Holiday Gift we decided to get off our butts and pause writing Goblins! long enough to issue forth this final edition of the Dice of Doom podcast for the year. Topics: * Our final thoughts on the Sci-fi Post Apocalyptic Transhuman Horror game Eclipse Phase. * Deliberately screwing with your player's characters for the purposes of plot. Is it OK to? * Tragedy as a genre for a Campaign Setting (Oedipus the Roleplaying Game, anyone?) * Realistic Ecology in Roleplaying Campaign Settings. Is it important? (Thank you HairyDM for the topic). * Beards on Dwarven Women. Yes or no? (Thank you PizzaKarin for the topic). | 20 12 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 035: Eclipse Phase First Impressions, When Good Rules Go Bad and Polarising Games | In this gripping episode of the DoDcast we discuss our first impressions of Eclipse Phase, debate what to do when good rules go bad (or, in Paul's case, what the hell to do when you stuff up) and we look at polarising roleplaying games into left and right. This last topic is a revisit of an idea that I originally posted a while back in an attempt to help us better understand our players and the games that we play. We also take the time to thank our loyal readers/listeners for their kind generosity in shopping at Amazon through our link. Thanks guys for allowing us to purchase Pathfinder, Traveller, Basic Roleplaying and Hackmaster. | 27 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 034: Dragon Warriors Review, TPKs: Who’s to Blame? and Win your Character a set of Steak Knives | In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we review Dragon Warriors through hopefully not particularly rose coloured glasses. We discuss the question "Total Party Kills:Who's to blame?" and what's more, identify exactly who it is. We also, as part of Play a New RPG Month, are offering you the chance to win your Character a set of Steak Knives in game*. That's right, we will write the rules, compose a short note to your GM and email you a certificate of authenticity that we scribble up if you let us know what your group is playing for the month of October | 4 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 033: Spirit of the Century Review, Dragon Warriors First Impressions and Do Rules Support Descriptive Comb | In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we review Spirit of the Century, talking about our experiences with stunts and aspects. We also discuss our first impressions of playing Dragon Warriors which is a flashback from our gaming past. As part of our discussion on Dragon Warriors we get sidetracked (egads! who would have seen that coming!) and we spend quite a bit of time discussing how rules describe combat, should they describe combat? and whether it's up to the players to look after that aspect of the game or not. | 19 9 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 032: Riddles and Puzzles in RPGs, Favourite Components of RPGs, Dice and Randomness in Games | There is a lot going on in this podcast, so instead of writing my usual introductory blurb on this one, I thought I would do a list instead. * We issue commands to Play a New RPG for the month of October * We discuss using riddles and puzzles in your game and whether or not they are a useful tool in your GMing belt * We debate another question from reader Disemvowel where he asks us what our perfect system would be in terms of individual mechanics from various systems * We answer questions from Samaldanach about whether or not randomness is useful in a roleplaying game and a related question from Beefgriller about randomness and dice mechanics in roleplaying games There are references to an article we wrote a while back on polarising roleplaying game between left and right style systems (much as we do political ideologies) which you may find useful to read before listening (if you haven't read it already). | 7 9 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 031: Refocusing a Game that has Lost its Way, Should a GM Controlling HP in Combat and The Role of the GM | In this episode of the podcast Dwayne regales us with stories of how a game he was running got off the rails (literally), and we talk about ways to get things back on track (bear with us, the intro takes a little while on this one...). We also answer a question posed to us by reader Disemvowel. He asks us "Could a GM control the HPs of the players in a game to promote better roleplaying." We also summarise our thoughts on the recent, and very controversial, guest posts on the role of the GM (at least until we get distracted by something else that is...). | 30 8 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 028: Listeners’ Questions Answered 01 | In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we conduct our first Q & A, taking four questions from listeners and readers. The questions we discuss are: Question 1: If a player cheats on a dice roll should a big deal be made of it, or should it ignored - asked by Symatt Question 2: What can you do to deal with difficult players who have bottomless pockets and backpacks and who refuse to fail any dice check - asked by Andy Horton Question 3: Do you restrict a player's ability to purchase certain items based on their level, or if they have the money, do you just let them buy it - asked by IvPalmer (note, the discussion on this topic inspired the Monty Haul post) Question 4: How can a GM encourage players to be more descriptive in their play? - asked by Symatt | 18 7 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 027: GURPS Review and Gaming Group Roundtable and Methods of Running Multiple RPG Groups Playing the Same | In this episode of the podcast we review the venerable and iconic game GURPS (Generic Universal Roleplaying System). We also, in a first, include a conversation had about the game at the conclusion of the final session with the entire gaming group where we go through and rate the game on Character Generation, Combat System, Rules (other than combat) and Overall Fun. We also answer a listener question from the guys at Roving Band of Misfits. They ask, "Can you discuss the idea of having two different RPG groups playing the same adventure with opposing goals." Just a note about the roundtable conversation: Due to the nature of how it was recorded, this portion of the podcast does not have the same level of production values that we usually keep to in our podcast. We felt some people would find it interesting, so we have included it as it offers the opinions of our entire gaming group, rather than just those of the podcasters. | 11 7 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 026: Rating the First Six Games and Creating Meaningful Character Motivations | As we have just gone past the halfway point for our Grand Gaming Experiment we look at our ratings for the first six games, what criteria we used, and how they fared. We also discuss how to develop more rich and useful character motivations and backgrounds to guide their actions throughout the campaign. We look at making meaningful decisions about character background and also making sure that it fits with the general direction of the GM's campaign and the other players around the gaming table. | 28 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 025: GURPS First Impressions and Playing Heros and Sidekicks | In this fun packed episode of the podcast we discuss our first impressions of GURPS, the General Universal Role Playing System from Steve Jackson Games and we also look at playing heros and sidekicks in your roleplaying games. If we look at the majority of fantasy fiction (up until recent times) the main protagonist in the story tends to be a loner, and if there is any one else in the story, they tend to be sidekicks. We discuss how to run sidekicks in a game, how to balance story share and ways to make the sidekick role fun for the players. We also discuss the possibilities created by taking a 'cast of characters' approach to running a game - giving players the ability to take on multiple roles and characters throughout the campaign. | 18 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 024: Games Workshop Switch to Resin Models and Do Rules Really Matter, Duncan’s Right of Reply | In this fun filled episode of the podcast we discuss the TV show that nearly was Korgoth of Barbaria, the switch by Games Workshop to move to Finecast resin for their models and we give Duncan a chance to discuss his views on whether rules matter or not. In a revisit to a topic that we discussed on what we consider to be one of our best episodes ever, we give Duncan the opportunity to debate his side of the 'Do Rules Really Matter' issue. We look at whether or not the character needs stats to be roleplayed well, when it's OK to ignore dice rolls and an optional rules for strip-roleplaying (it's a pants-lite system). We also look at the recent move by Games Workshop to change their model production from metal to a new type of resin called Finecast. This has generated quite a bit of debate as to the merits of the new material, so we sent Duncan out to have a look at them and report back. We also discuss the pricing issues relating to Games Workshop miniatures. | 4 6 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 023: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition First Impressions & Sources of Story Lines for GM’s | This week we discuss our first impressions of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition and sources of inspiration for Games Masters for their roleplaying games. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is very dear to Paul and I. It was our first fully fledged roleplaying game experience back in the 80's and we have loved playing it on and off over the last 3 decades. So it was with some mixed feelings that we decided to try out 3rd edition for our gaming experiment. | 28 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 022: Vampire: The Masquerade Review and Running an Investigative RPG | In this episode we review Vampire: The Masquerade which we have just finished playing as part of our Grand Gaming Experiment and we look at running investigative style roleplaying games. After the completion of our Vampire: The Masquerade game we started discussing how often we had run games where the PC's were put in positions of having to investigate mysteries, crimes, conspiracies and the like. An investigative game suits any setting you may be playing from high fantasy through to a gritty Call of Cthulhu game. If you have ever thought that you might like to cast your players in the roles of detectives, sleuths, or hapless bystanders who get caught up in a conspiracy, we have a look at how to run these games along with tips to giving hints to your players to avoid the awful "I don't know what to do next..." problem that often plagues games of this sort. | 20 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

As Lisette is not only running Vampire: The Masquerade, it is also her first* time running a game as a GM. We thought we'd ask her how her first experience GM'ing was going. We talk about the pits and hurdles that newbie GM's often experience and some ways to overcome them. We also have a chat with special guest Mardo about the writings of HP Lovecraft and where to start with his voluminous writings. ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 020: Vampire: The Masquerade Initial Impressions and Making the Most of a Character’s Death | In this episode of the podcast we give our initial impressions of Vampire: The Masquerade (2nd Edition) and discuss how to make the most of a character death or end of a campaign. Many times, when a character dies, it is the result of a bad die roll, an encounter gone wrong, or a failed skill check. We have started allowing players to narrate the end of the character's existence, giving the player a way of making the most of the character's end. This has made for some very memorable character deaths. As part of this discussion, we also look at bringing campaigns to an elegant end, and the importance of having a final point so that they don't just 'fizzle out'. | 30 4 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 019: Dragon Chow Dice Bags, All Flesh Must Be Eaten Review and Adding Social Themes to your Roleplaying Ga | In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we review our Dragon Chow dice bags, we review the Zombie Apocalypse roleplaying game All Flesh Must Be Eaten and we discuss how to add social themes to your games. During our All Flesh Must Be Eaten campaign, Paul (who was the Zombie Master) decided to try and add social themes to the game. The idea was to highlight the importance of personal relationship networks and how they collapse of these can add to the horrific nature of a catastrophe. This is not a new concept, Vampire: The Masquerade recommends attempting the same thing, but it was not something we had consciously done a lot of previously. We discuss whether or not it worked, how it could be improved upon and did it actually contribute to the game. | 15 4 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 017: Do Rules Really Matter and Manipulating Character Generation as the GM | (http://diceofdoom.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/DoD-Podcast-Logo-Lrg-150x150.png)In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we give an update on our All Flesh Must Be Eaten Campaign, we discuss Do Rules Really Matter and we investigate the topic of Manipulating Character Generation as one of the many roles of the GM. Inspired by this tweet (https://twitter.com/theangrydm/status/48218040072028161) by The Angry DM (https://twitter.com/TheAngryDM) we decided to have a chat about whether or not rules are important in roleplaying games and if they can be safely ignored. We discuss whether or not you should allow rolls to be made for social interactions and what role, if any, do the stats on your character sheet play in how you roleplay your character. We also propose an interesting twist to the character generation process. For our GM'ing tips section this week we discuss the unspoken role of the GM to manipulate the character generation process to create a group of characters that makes sense in the campaign world. All to often we have sat around a table and have come to the conclusion that none of the characters would choose to spend time with each other given the option. We look at ways of dealing with this situation so that it doesn't necessarily crop up in your games. 04:20 - All Flesh Must Be Eaten First Session 12:15 - Do Rules Matter 34:10 - GM'ing Tips: Manipulating Character Generation | 19 3 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 016: All Flesh Must Be Eaten First Impressions and Gamma World Review | In this episode of the podcast we lament the pulling of the Mountains of Madness movie, we discuss the Play a New RPG Month project, we give a brief update on our game Goblins!, we discuss our initial impressions of the zombie horror survivor game All Flesh Must Be Eaten and we review Gamma World. Gamma World was a game that we were a bit hesitant to try as it is based on the D&D4e ruleset, and our Grand Gaming Experiment is about trying out new games. It wasn't until Paul quite rightly pointed out that the other part of the experiment was to try settings that were completely new to us as well. ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 015: Play a New RPG Month, Gamma World Initial Impressions & Using All 5 Senses in GM’ing | This week we discuss our new project Play A New RPG Month, our initial impressions of Gamma World and Using All Five Senses in GM'ing. Play a New RPG is an idea that has been kicking around in our head for a while now is to start a campaign to get as many gaming groups as possible to try a new rpg for a month, to break the mould and experience something new. We've been doing the extreme version of this for the last 4 months and we have found it to be extremely rewarding. For this reason we have started Play a New RPG Month to be held in October. ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 014: At the Mountains of Madness Movie, Zombie & Cthulhu Dice Review and Choosing Balanced or Unbalanced E | In this episode of the Dice of Doom podcast we discuss the recent news that James Cameron is planning to make the H.P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness into a movie, we review Zombie Dice and Cthulhu Dice and we debate the value of balancing encounters or leaving them more realistic. One of the key components to a lot of Roleplaying Games is the inclusion of a mechanic to balance encounters, or in other words, make sure that the players will always have a chance of winning a combat. This leads to a situation where players may feel that they are always in a position to win a combat and will likely behave as such. It also does not reflect the real world (well, in-as-much as a Fantasy RPG could be considered 'real'). We discuss the relative merits of each methodology and look at examples of games that handle it differently. | 26 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 013: Rolemaster Roleplaying Game Review | This episode of the podcast we discuss our experiences with playing Rolemaster Roleplaying (MERP) by Iron Crown Enterprises. We recently finished our Rolemaster campaign as part of our Grand Gaming Experiment. It's one of those classics that has been around since 1980 in one form or another, and while many gamers have heard of it, few, it seems, have tried playing it. Rolemaster has formed the basis for other systems - most notably Middle Earth Roleplaying Game amongst others. It is famously complicated and descriptive using multiple books of tables to resolve combat and develop characters and intricate methods of creating characters. We have been making fun of Rolemaster for its complexity as a gaming group for years, and we figured it was time to put our money where our mouth is and give it a run through. | 12 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitDice of Doom Podcast 010b: Powergaming in Roleplaying Games – Cuchulain’s Right of Reply | This special episode of the podcast is in response to the Powergaming in Roleplaying games episode. When we recorded the Powergaming topic, one of our writers and podcaster, Cuchulain (Paul) was unable to attend as he was sipping cocktails on a beach somewhere. On his return he made it quite clear that he disagreed with a lot of what was said and we decided it might be a good idea to record his opinions for posterity. Once again I try valiantly to act as Devil's Advocate (hopefully with minimal bias). Often weather takes a back seat in RPG's when in reality it would frequently affect how the player characters would be interacting with their environment.
