ExplicitPODCAST: Film Actually Ep088 – Red Tails | Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Richard Gray Better late than never, here is the new episode of Film Actually. This week David, Josh & Richard share their opinions on the new George Lucas produced war movie "Red Tails". Plus What We've Been Watching and a brand new Lists of Five - Five Special Effects Scenes That Made Us Go Wow! Film Actually is the official movie podcast of geekactually.com. The news section is now officially it's own show called Film Actually News. Look for it on the feed because it is loud, fast and under thirty minutes... or your money back. If you are an iTunes user, please leave a review. Your comments help us improve the show. This show carries an explicit tag due to infrequent coarse language. Listen or download it here or subscribe to it on iTunes Your Show Notes Follow: What We’ve Been Watching: A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week including Josh's Bargain Basement. Feature Film Review ‘Red Tails’ directed by Anthony Hemingway and produced by George Lucas. It is written by John Ridley and Aaron McGruder based on story by John Ridley in turn based on a book by John B. Holway. It stars Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristen Wilds, Elijah Kelley, Ne-Yo, Kevin Phillips, Daniela Ruah and Brian Cranston. Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history. Source: 20th Century Fox Our Verdict: A great subject matter that is given a weak treatment here. An okay first half and some amazing visual effects is let down by a poorly conceived second half and some truly terrible dialogue. Watch the trailer here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox/redtails/ Lists of Five This week our Lists of Five: Five Special Effects Scenes That Made Us Go Wow! Whether the film is good or bad, sometimes a great special effects scene can just take your breath away at how well it was conceived and executed on screen, here are five examples. Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list. Feature Film Review 1 ‘Dark Shadows’ directed by Tim Burton and written by Seth Grahame-Smith from a story by John August and Seth Grahame-Smith based on the TV series by Dan Curtis. It stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote and Christopher Lee. An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. Source: IMDB Richard's Verdict: Tedious Tim Burton makes the film boring. Watch the trailer here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/wb/darkshadows/ Feature Film Review 2 ‘Safe’ Written and directed by Boaz Yakin. It stars Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon and James Hong. Mei, a young girl whose memory holds a priceless numerical code, finds herself pursued by the Triads, the Russian mob, and corrupt NYC cops. ExplicitPODCAST: Film Actually Ep083 – Battleship | Hosts: David McVay, Josh Philpott & Alexis Ayala This week David & Josh are joined by the host/creator of The Uncanny Valley, Alexis Ayala for a review the new Hasbro board game adaptation "Battleship". Plus What We've Been Watching, Josh's Bargain Basement and a brand new Lists of Five - The Roland Emmerich Honourary List of Five Crap Movies That Go Boom! Listen or download it here or subscribe to it on iTunes Your Show Notes Follow: What We’ve Been Watching: A collection of other things we’ve been watching during the week. Josh has been catching up with the original A Nightmare on Elm Street series, Alexis has been watching Game of Thrones season 2 and The Legend of Korra and David watched Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Night Shift and War Horse. Plus Josh's Bargain Basement: Altered States. Feature Film Review ‘Battleship’ directed by Peter ‘I Want To Be Michael Bay’ Berg and written by Erich Hoeber and Jon Hoeber and is based on the Hasbro board game. It stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna. Based on the classic Hasbro naval combat game, Battleship is the story of an international fleet of ships who come across an alien armada whilst on a Naval war games exercise. An intense battle ensues over sea, land and air. What do the aliens - known as 'The Regents' - want? Source: Anonymous on IMDB Spoiler Section: 00:50:41 - 00:56:47 - Fast forward this bit if you don't want to hear spoilers. Our Verdict: A film that makes Michael Bay films look intelligent, didn't think it was possible? Well here it is. Plot holes so big you can sail a battleship through them (thanks for that Sam *wink*) and acting so wooden that it makes the game it is based on look positively animated. Never boring but, oh so stupid. Watch the trailer here http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/battleship/ Feedback Graham Parker wrote to let us know about two bad films: Ankle Biters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0344843/) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy29AooUhd0 and Flying Virus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0282496/) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPKKBfIE5lg Lists of Five This week our Lists of Five: The Roland Emmerich Honourary List of Five Crap Movies That Go Boom! Roland Emmerich has made an art form out of blowing things up, the films are not always intelligently written or even that well acted but they are just good dang fun. Here are five more like them. Just a reminder, because we never like to just make things easy on ourselves, our lists are not necessarily top five lists, they are more or a less a list of film recommendations within the theme of the list. Movie Geeks Unite!
I am a long time listener to The Geek Actually Podcast because I love the passionate film reviews and the humourous look at the weeks movie news, the tech section was okay but it was just something to get through before the film stuff. Now the show has been broken up and I can just enjoy the film talk. I love this show, it is an hour of movie geek goodness! Keep up the good work David, I love your network. I need more Celine, though - girl power.
Enjoy it every time.
Thought I wouldn't bother with the film section after the shows break up, but I was thankfully wrong. Now it means I get almost half as much more geek actually style podcasts a week. Funny, geeky, informative. No complaints, aside from my volume leveling gripe as expressed in my tech actually review.
Great Show
Great show with great info of new movies. Always good for a laugh. Keep up the good work
