ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 69! Developing animation for TV vs. Creating your own animated short. | The flawed development system. Developing and pitching ideas for animated TV shows to networks and studios is a tough way to go. I have been going at it for seven years. I've managed to sell one property, my short Hero Heights at Nickelodeon. I've spent hundreds and hundreds of hours developing other shows and pitching them to all the networks only to be rejected time and time again, usually for silly reasons. Plus all of this development work is done for no pay | 23 4 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 68! The Barnes Collection $30 Billion Dollar Art Heist. | It’s not just a bunch of pictures on a wall -- rather, the entire collection is itself a work of art. "The Barnes Foundation would attack the enemies of intelligence and imagination in art, whether or not those enemies are protected by financial power or social prestige!" Dr. Albert C. Barnes Barnes was an American self made millionaire and art collector. He founded the Barnes Foundation, a private art gallery and school near Philadelphia. The school houses the Barnes Collection, one of the most mind blowing and important Post-Impressionist and Early Modernist art collections in the world! It is valued at over $30 Billion dollars and belieive it or not, it was stolen! The paintings in the Barnes collection are so important that they are the envy of every major art museum in the world. Louvre, Moma, Metropolitan, Guggenheim, Getty, eat your heart out bitches! Within a few years Barnes's collection grew to house 181 paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 69 by Paul Cézanne (There are more cezzanes in the barnes collection than there are in the entire city of Paris!) suck on that Frenchy! 59 by Henri Matisse, 46 by Pablo Picasso, 21 by Chaim Soutine, 18 by Henri Rousseau, 16 by Amedeo Modigliani, 11 by Edgar Degas, 7 by Vincent Van Gogh, and 6 by Georges Seurat. In addition, the collection holds numerous other masters, including Giorgio de Chirico, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, Paul Gauguin, El Greco, Francisco Goya, Edouard Manet, Jean Hugo, Claude Monet, Maurice Utrillo, William Glackens, Charles Demuth, and Maurice Prendergast. the concentration of these artistic masters is unrivaled people! | 29 3 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 67! Super Hero Movies and Saturday Morning Cartoons | 2012 the year of the Super Hero Movies. Marvel has been dominating at the box office for the last couple of years. Warner Bros and DC are hoping to crush Marvel with Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated third and final chapter of his Batman Saga The Dark Knight Rises. Batman is going up against serious competition and going mano a mano a mano with Marvel's The Avengers and Sony's reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. Why Saturday Morning Cartoons are Dead. When I was a wee lad no matter how crappy things got at school every week I always had one beacon of a hope. One thing to look forward to, and that was Saturday Morning cartoons. Sadly Saturday Morning cartoons are now dead. People ask all me all the time. "WTF happened to Saturday morning cartoons?" | 26 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 66! The Thief and The Cobbler. | The Thief and the Cobbler was supposed to be the greatest animated feature film ever created! The film is master animator Richard Williams life's work, a highly revered legend in the animation industry.Williams labored on his dream project for over 30 years. Sadly, his masterpiece suffered a similar fat such as The Magnificent Ambersons and the unfinished Don Quoxite by Orson Welles. Imagine how much it sucks to have your life's work taken away from you because of money and then released to the public in a form totally different from that you intended. I call this artist's hell. That's the tragic and sad story behind The Thief and the Cobbler. When he began production in 1964, Williams wanted The Thief and the Cobbler to be his masterpiece, and a milestone in the art of animation. Because its complicated animation and independent funding, The Thief and the Cobbler was in and out of production for over three decades. Williams worked for years as a producer of incredible TV commercials. Every cent he earned went into the gradual independent production of The Thief. | 9 2 12 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 63! Conceptual Art and other forms of Bullshit. | This vague nature of the definition has made it possible for all types of twisted abominations to be labeled as art and sold at ridiculously inflated prices. What is art? While its boundaries are hard to encompass, Webster's defines art as: Skill acquired by experience, study, or observation. An occupation requiring knowledge or skill. The conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. As a result those who want all the perks of being an artist but don't want to do all of the work have taken a shortcut. Rather than dedicate themselves to enriching art they have chosen to be smart asses at art's expense. They become Conceptual and or Appropriation Artists. | 2 12 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 61! Poetic License Renewal with Christopher Luke Trevilla | On today's show the subject is Poetry. These days the poetry has some lousy stigma attached to it. Most people think poetry is only for greeting cards and angsty teens who like to cut themselves. I happen to love poetry with a passion. A truly great poet can touch your soul, cram volumes of truth about the human experience into just a few lines, and make a you rethink your views of life. Let's see a Hallmark card do that. My guest today a very talented young poet named Christopher Luke Trevilla. Chris refers to himself as a " Stand-Up Philosopher". ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 52! Listener Email and Voice mail Buffet | From around the age of six, I have had a passion for drawing the shapes of objects. From about the age of fifty I produced a number of designs, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention. At seventy-three, I finally apprehended something of the true quality of birds, animals, insects, fish and of the vital nature of grasses and trees. So, by the time I am 80, I will have made much progress, so that by ninety I will have penetrated to their essential nature. By one hundred, I will decidedly have attained a higher state, indefinable, and at one hundred and ten, each dot, each line shall surely possess a life of its own. May Heaven, that grants long life, give me the chance to prove that this is no lie. Hokusai (who lived to be 90) On today's show I put together a collection of emails and voice mails for a massive buffet of art talk. ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 51! Creative problem solving with Picasso, Chaplin, and The Beatles. | Artistic genius across three different artistic disciplines. Picasso’s genius for painting; Chaplin’s genius for film making; and the Beatles’ genius for songs are fine examples of how artistic creativity can be used to approach complex problems. These guys all were masters of creating art that depicted universal experiences that could be appreciated by us all. They were spontaneous and intuitive in their approaches at first and then built discipline and persistence as their projects evolved. So to understand creativity , we must understand the character of the artist. | 26 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 49! Advice for Artists on Overcoming the Fear of Failure. | Ever notice that whenever you begin an new artistic project like a new book, painting, portfolio, short film, etc that the darned Fear of Failure Demon always seems to drop in to petrify you? You spend sleepless gut wrenching nights where all you can imagine is doom. You toss and turn with dark visions of both yourself and your art as objects of scorn, ridicule, or even worse objects of pity. So you put off trying for the thousandth time, and ditch your dreams. Ask the top painters, cartoonists, designers, illustrators, comic creators, animators, poets, writers, directors, and they will all claim that they are no different! They too have had to deal with the Fear of Failure Demon and have had their shares of crushing disappointment. I'd like to give a shout out to Krishna Sadashivam The creator of the killer web comic PC Weenies! He called in and left a voice mail question on the Man vs. Art Minion Hotline! He asks what animation studios are looking for in terms of Storyboard Artist Portfolios. Check out the podcast if you want to know what I had to say on that. Born in 1920 Isaac Asimov was a writer of some of the greatest classic Science Fiction stories of the last hundred years. Of his works The Foundation Series… The Galactic Empire series and his Robot series were major contributions to the world of sci-fi literature. And These are just a few among the 500 books that he wrote or edited in his lifetime. In particular Asimov’s Robot series generated 2 lasting concepts in science fiction including the invention of a robot’s ‘Positronic’ brain and the 3 laws of Robotics. Both concepts were featured in the movies ‘The Bicentennial Man’ and ‘I Robot’ which were loosely based on his characters. Lastly I'd like to present you with some samples of the 2D Traditional and some 3D digital Animation my students did from my History and Principles of Animation and Timing for Animation Classes at the Gnomon School of Visual effects in Hollywood California. | 25 4 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 47! The Vital Importance of Art Advocates Like Enrique Diaz. | I'm going to make a big sweeping generalization right now. I'm going to "paint with a broad brush" so to speak. It's tough being an Artist. Yup. It always has been I suppose. There's a bunch of crap we have to put up with! But you know which artists have it the worst I think? Little kid artists. Especially lower income little kids. In the hood there is no support for the arts. The kids have no access to supplies, equipment, training, mentors, books, or even a place to sit down and draw. ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 46! 7 Myths About Artists that have to go! | Today I want to rip apart and put to rest 7 awful myths and misconceptions about of art! These Myths are totally wrong and mess up the integrity and purpose of art. 1. Art means whatever people want it to mean. No way Jose! A professional artist, always has intention, and it’s his job to communicate that intent through mastering their craft and applying their skill in the form of hard work. 2. Art is all a matter of opinion and is subjective. Hello! Every kind of response to art is an opinion, so that’s not news. What the myth implies is that all opinions are equally valid. That is FALSE! Some opinions are better than others. Opinions that are based on better reasoning are much stronger than opinions based on bad or zero reasoning! Not all art is subjective. Some art is objectively good, and some art is objectively bad. The correct assessment depends on the evaluation of the criteria, not on the viewer's whims or tastes. | 21 3 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 45! For the Love of Drawing! | On today's episode of Man vs. Art I want to explore how the act of drawing has thoroughly shaped our lives. There was a time when the ability to draw was seen as the primary essential skill of any artist. But in the age of the cut and paste pixel and digital imagery many see drawing as an outdated activity. I want to challenge the modern prejudice that it's not cool to draw. That those who draw are sad Luddites and weird loners stuck in a dead past. Drawing is the most rewarding and essential artistic skill at work in the world today. | 12 3 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

She has taught animation at Savannah College of Art and Design, and taught at Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Film & Animation until 2008. ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 39! Writer, Artist, and Independent Animation Filmmaker Ken Mora | Hola Minions! ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 38! Color Theory and Painting. | There is so much that can be said about Color Theory that it could fill the Library of Alexandria. It can be overwhelming, so for the Man vs. Art Intro to Color Theory, I'm going to give you the underwhelming Cliff's notes version. In 1666 the genius Sir Isaac Newton put together the first circular diagram of colors . Ever since then, artists and even scientists have studied and created numerous variations of this concept. Over the years much debate has been provoked due to the differences of opinion about the validity of one format over another. In my opinion, any color wheel which presents a logically arranged sequence of pure hues is valid. | 7 12 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 37! How to make your drawings more expressive. | Hola Minions! In today's show I give you a few helpful tips on making your drawings more expressive! A simple way to make your characters look more expressive is to pay attention to the eye direction. When you are doing a pin up of a cartoon character 9 out of 10 times you should have the character looking at us. It is much more powerful to have the figure make eye contact with the viewer. A lot of artists show their lack of confidence by having the character looking away. Not good! Unless the eye direction is dictated by the story in a panel or action you should have your cartoon making good eye contact with us. | 24 11 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 24! Candid Interview with Disney & Filmation Animation Artist Dana Reemes Part 1. | Today I am going to introduce to you a very special friend of mine from way back in my Disney days. His name is Dana Reemes and he is the cat's pajamas! I used to stay late at the studio every night and work on my own animation projects. You know me, I'm always trying to better myself. I figured I wasn't going to be at Disney forever and wanted to take full advantage of my time there. Dana worked nights as well and we became friends. Dana met Robert Crumb in 1967 in the flea bag Miramonte Hotel on Mission Street where Robert was staying at the time. Dana brought his sketchbook and Robert kindly went over it with him! Not only that, Crumb gave some sage advice as well as a Crowquill Penpoint! Believe it or not Dana still has it! | 23 6 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 23! The History of Animation According to Raul Part 2. | Well I learned that there is no free lunch in Animation. The first hundred years of modern animation was no picnic! Especially for the Artists. Producing animation is tough. It takes hard work, devotion, and vision. Even animation that is "phoned in" or "hacked out" requires effort. Animation has dealt with B.S. and adversity at every turn. But more importantly I learned that the greatest achievements in animation no matter the era, always have the most humble of beginnings. | 8 6 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan vs. Art Episode 22! The History of Animation According to Raul. | Hola Minions! I certainly hope all is well. Today's podcast is the first of a two part series on.... The History of Animation according to me. Why am I doing this? A good question to which I have a good answer. I recently came to a big decision concerning my technique for producing animation. For the longest time I've been clinging to my traditional animation shtick, and it has served me well. But now I need to scale down the fancy stuff and streamline my whole process. This is a must if I ever expect to increase my cartoon output. I want to tell stories that are more involved and work with a bigger cast of characters. I believe that by adopting a Ghettomation attitude I can knock out more toons without sacrificing quality. I decided to research the history of Animation to learn how our cartoon forefathers handled technique, technological change, and social conventions. That way I could find ideas on ways to scale back on my own process and learn what not to do from their past mistakes. When you want to make a giant leap forward sometimes it's a good idea to look back first. For as long as man has been creating art, he has also tried to depict motion. [youtube uvqLujgcLyI 480 385] Instead of the smoking gun, for animation there is The smoking pot. The images found on five thousand year old clay pot in Iran shows a sequence of a goat jumping up to take a nibble from a plant. Piper vs. Superfly Snuka! Here we see the a four thousand year old Egyptian Mural that clearly attempted to capture the motion of two wrestlers going mano y mano. Phantasmagorie by Emile Cohl. The earliest known paper drawn cartoon is the 1908 French short. [youtube aEAObel8yIE 480 385] His exalted Holiness Winsor MCcay Winsor MCcay is considered one of the first true animators . In the early 1900's he took full advantage of the recently invented motion picture camera and used his love for drawing to animate films that were pure genius. MCcay's animated films have stood the test of time and to this day are considered masterpieces. I think the word exquisite describes MCcay's work perfectly. Gertie the Dinosaur [youtube mnuhP2URCoo 480 385] [youtube ixK1DffOsbE 480 385] MCcay stunned audiences with this wonderful animated piece that showed a character with personality, solid anatomy and weight! While other animators were using quarters and nickels to trace out heads and bodies for their cartoons, He was light years ahead of his peers producing elegant pieces that blew the pocket change brigade out of the water. How A Mosquito Operates, Set mind to blown. [youtube yvzAJouHh7k 480 385] Little Nemo. [youtube kcSp2ej2S00 480 385] Some really good drawing and acting in this work! The Sinking of the Lusitania. [youtube nN-KdPBhyjc 480 385] Brilliant depiction of the terrible maritime disaster that shocked the world. Walt Disney's Steamboat Willy It all started with a mouse that was a big F.U. to Universal. [youtube PRbzOm9dqMY 480 385] Steamboat Willy marked the beginning of a new era early on, barely in the infancy of animation. Cartoons could finally talk. Disney Studio held vast influence over the development of the animation process for decades.. The Fleischer Brothers [youtube BPulJzMIzck 480 385] [youtube Mb8iYqIVBzQ 480 385] Best Superman Animation adaptation ever. These guys created very unique cartoons that I am a total sucker for. With their studio in Florida they were able develop independently of all the other cartoon studios for many years! Warner Brothers The cartoon asylum known as Termite Terrace produced the unforgettable Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes. I think I now know what I must do. Speaking of awesome..... ExplicitMan Vs. Art Episode 19 Cartoons, Agents, and Pitching with Jim Lujan and Kevin Cross | Artist reps AKA Agents. Why would you need one? We artists dream of being represented by an agent who will market our work, set up pitch meetings, score us an in-house or freelance gig, and do all that boring non-art stuff like marketing, negotiating, and selling. Well if you have a great idea for an animated TV show, Movie, or book and want to pitch it to the major studios and networks, you'll have a tough time getting a meeting without an agent. The stark truth is that it's extremely tough to find a good agent. For artists it's best if you're already known enough in your field to have agents seeking you instead of you going to them. Sadly this rarely occurs. Very few artists get this privilege. The rest of us must submit material to many agents and agencies and choke down the pile of rejection slips before eventually hooking up with an agent willing to take a chance on us. | 10 4 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitMan Vs. Art Episode 18! The Comics Debate. What are comics? What can they do? | I feel strongly that the future of comics is going to be in Motion comics. When done correctly they are very cool. They look like traditional comic books, but use sound sometimes and movement for effect. As of now the motion is pretty simple. A zoom-in or out, pans, light effects, etc. But in the hands of a comic artist with an understanding animation and acting, the sky's the limit. | 26 3 10 | Free | View In iTunes |
