iTunes Review

808s & Heartbreak is an anomaly in the pop landscape: a nearly extemporaneous work that hews to its author’s emotional and creative needs rather than audience expectations. Precipitated by the death of West’s mother and his subsequent split with his fiancé, 808s & Heartbreak is a radical departure from Kanye’s career trajectory. Where Late Registration and Graduation presented a parade of colors delivered with a self-deprecating sense of humor, 808s is cold and mechanical. Despite its icy sheen though, the undercurrent of loss and despair comes through the strange grooves of “Love Lockdown,” “Coldest Winter,” and “Welcome To Heartbreak.” At times the album seems one-dimensional, but its significance comes as much from its concept and its audacity as it does from the music itself. For Kanye to take his art in a drastically different direction just as his superstardom is at its zenith shows an uncommon amount of courage. Though 808s & Heartbreak will not go down as the fullest realization of West’s musical talent, it may go down as the most important statement in the man’s career.

Customer Reviews

I'm sorry Mr. West is gone.

I cannot believe that after two amazing albums and one somewhat tolerable album Kanye West would follow it up with this garbage. The T Pain knock off voice effect is just as annoying as when T Pain does it himself. This is just one of many recent mess ups that has caused me to shake my head at an artist I used to truly appreciate. Try making another million dollar video Kanye. That worked last time... didn't it?

808s Will Change Music Forever

This album is amazing. I'll give the track by track analysis, but you have to get the full thing to really experience the emotion Kanye put into this. Say You Will - 5 Stars Really deep lyrics, sets the tone for the album beautifully. Welcome to Heartbreak - 5 Stars Once again, excellent lyrics, and the instrumentals are used to perfection. Heartless - 5 Stars Not even one of my top 5 tracks on this album, but I still love this one. Everyone should know this one by now. Amazing - 5 Stars Inspiring beat, introspective lyrics, and a powerful verse from Young Jeezy. Love Lockdown - 5 Stars Innovating. Paranoid - 5 Stars More up-temp than the rest, and is one of the few dance tracks of the album. RoboCop - 5 Stars Amazing strings. Possibly my favourite on the album. Street Lights - 5 Stars SO introspective! Bad News - 5 Stars Love it. Great singing, lyrics, and beat. See You In My Nightmares - 5 Stars Future single for sure. Coldest Winter - 5 Stars I cried when I first heard this. Beautiful. Pinocchio Story - 5 Stars This is amazing, even more amazing considering he freestyled it.

AUTO TUNE IS GROSS.

Sorry this album maybe be Artisitc, but it blows goats, in comparison to any of his other albums,...this is gonna play out in less then a month, and Kanye is just going to milk his fame to sell CD's.....the WHOLE ALBUM IN AUTOTUNE??!?? gimme a break i thought weezy overplayed that ISH already. And don't hate on me coz I gave this crtique, I'm a HUGE KANYE fan, I just don't like his new direction...(being an "artist" and all)

Biography

Born: June 08, 1977 in Atlanta, GA

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

In the span of three short years, Kanye West went from hip-hop beatmaker to worldwide hitmaker, as his stellar production work for Jay-Z led to a major-label recording contract and, ultimately, a wildly successful solo career. West paired his beats with tongue-twisting raps and a self-assured, flamboyant personality. His dapper fashion sense set him apart from many of his rap peers, and his confidence often came across as boastful or even egotistical, albeit amusingly so. This flamboyance, of course,...
