iTunes Review

After finally achieving success with their previous album, Eyes Open, Snow Patrol set out to balance between their newfound accessibility and a desire to break past all creative barriers. “Take Back the City” crackles with a tough pop-rock drive, singer Gary Lightbody channeling an urban energy and an ‘80s New Wave groove. The song’s obvious joy for living is more subtly weaved into the existential wallowing that haunts the space-themed tracks, “If There’s a Rocket Tie Me To It” and “The Planets Bend Between Us,” where Lightbody sounds less self-assured and more angst-ridden. “Lifeboats” uses a stereo-pan on Lightbody’s double-tracked vocals for a cool, disorienting effect. “The Golden Floor” evokes a spiritual dance with its tribal rhythm and dark keyboards. Recorded in both the bucolic Irish countryside and the urban frenzy of Berlin, A Hundred Millions Suns brilliantly plays between the two worlds, offering moments of contemplation and chaos. Then there’s the 16-minute finale, “The Lightning Strike,” where three movements build to the end of the world, dancing to the joyous finish. Snow Patrol are unafraid of their grand ambitions.

To Melt Your Heart & Lift Your Spirit

Get the iTunes Deluxe version with the video bonuses, because it cannot be beat! It is only $3 more. "A Hundred Million Suns" cannot exist without Snow Patrol’s earlier albums (and also, the Reindeer Section efforts), which I love, but this is definitely Snow Patrol's best album. In every way, it is richer, more substantial, and so very satisfying. I don't think I can say it any better than Gary Lightbody himself (in the video bonus on the Deluxe version): "'...it certainly sounds better than any record we've ever made: I mean that sonically, musically, lyrically, everything, the passion, the heart, the soul.  It's up so many levels I can't even count.'" Last track, The Lightning Strike - Wow, unbelievable! Can't stop listening to it! Luxuriously 16 minutes long with three parts: i) What if the Storm Ends, ii) The Sunlight Through the Flags and, iii) Daybreak. Lyrically and vocally marvellous at every turn. Musically, too much going on and not enough time & space to describe just how fantastic it is! You just have to hear it. Love the piano segue into Part II; Part III is my favourite...such a JOY, truly adore Lightbody's voice here and the music transports you to another place, so, SO great! If There's a Rocket... - a favourite for sure. The usual, amazing sensitive lyrics and picture being painted...wonderful, explosive music. Crack the Shutters - absolutely adore it. The music is so superb and the lyrics give you such great visuals that it will make your heart swell. This will be a hit for certain. Take Back the City – love song for Belfast. A great, up tempo track. Loved it on first listen when they released the single. Lifeboats - an underlying acoustic vibe, has a sort of slumber to it, really good. The Golden Floor - right off the top sounds great, wonderful storytelling again...a seductive feel to this one. Please Just Take These Photos… - love, love, the drums here...awesome lyrics once again…literally, a picture tells a thousand stories. Set Down Your Glass - a really quiet, lovely one…love the piano...the tale this tells <sigh> vulnerability! The Planets Bend Between Us - Lyrically this feels like 'Crack the Shutters' Part 2...another quieter, pretty one and where the album takes its title from. Engines – splendid, wicked, grittier music, great lyrics. Disaster Button – rockier track. Party time, being floored by and attracted to someone. On the Deluxe Version: Videos: Studio Tour - totally cool to see this montage of studios, instruments, equipment. First Week of Term – Loving the behind the scenes! They’re rehearsing and explaining the multiple layers of music/instrumentation and figuring out how to play these tracks live (hello, welcome to Radiohead’s world, they are the masters of it.) Very interesting interview where they explain how the album evolved very quickly, the multiple places that they recorded, and how they feel about it all. It’s also nice to see and hear the camaraderie and sense of humour – they’re having a lot of fun. Flawless sounding performances of ‘Take Back the City’, ‘If There’s a Rocket Tie Me to it’, ‘Crack the Shutters’, and ‘Please Just Take These Photos…’– they’re also really beautifully filmed. I am always in awe that new, great music is constantly being created. The next, truly great song(s) is just around the corner, being born. I love it when it comes from my favourite artists and that they just keep getting better. Can’t wait until the boys bring the tour – they are such a delight in concert and Lightbody is the most congenial front man ever.

They topped it!!

I have always been a fan of SP, right from day one. When Eyes Open was released I thought that was their best work ever, with Chasing Cars, a song that always gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. I wondered how they would ever top that album. A Hundred Million Suns did just that. This album is just full of great songwriting, lyrics, and sweet melodies. At the moment, my favorite song is track #6, "Please Take These Photos From My Hands". It sort of reminds me of Chasing Cars. This entire album is beautiful and I strongly recommend buying this. You will not be sorry!

Snow Patrol does it again

Wonderful album, great artists and easy to listen to. Amazing songs!

Biography

Formed: 1994 in Dundee, Scotland

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After failing to secure an international audience for nearly ten years, Snow Patrol broke into the mainstream with 2003's Final Straw, a mega-selling album that showcased the band's fondness for epic, melancholic rock. The group had originally stuck closer to the pop realm, releasing quirky albums that took more cues from Belle & Sebastian than Coldplay (to whom the band would later draw many comparisons). Final Straw proved to be a turning point, however, paving...
