Mountain of a Debut

Without digging a little deeper, it’s easy to dismiss our generation’s conribution to music as nothing but a highly-marketable wasteland of youtube dance crazes, misogynistic classic rock throwbacks, and an Orwellian use of the autotune effect. Bubbling underneath the surface however, are bands whose music is inhabited by ghosts and stories nobody tells anymore, music that sounds like sinking ships and cold northern nights. Bands that don’t write singles, but rather shape true, unbridled, listening experiences. Bands like Bruce Peninsula, an experimental folk collective from Toronto, Ontario, whose debut album “A Mountain Is A Mouth”, will make you feel anywhere but. At eleven members, of whom almost all sing, the group is enormous, and consequently so is their sound. Atmospherically, the album is simultaneously ethereal and grandiose. The opening track “Inside/Outside” is a testament to both the grace and foreboding that pervades this record in all aspects. The arrangements vary from the harrowingly sparse to progressively lush, employing a sundry assortment of instruments and percussive tackle. The latter is most evident on floor-stomping, paint-can-thrashing “Satisfied”, a thundering take on the gospel traditional. Vocally, Neil Haverty’s gruff voice takes front and center on the majority of the tracks, and eloquently contrasts the choir behind. The standout tracks are “Weave Myself a Dress” and “Drinking All Day”. Misha Bower’s weathered, vocals are filled with sorrow, redemption, and at times I found myself physically moved by her performance. A Mountain is a Mouth is an album in the truest sense. It deserves to be listened to in its entirety, ingested, and then listened to again. It contains a humanity and sincerity that is rare within the music that gets peddled to us on a daily basis, and it demands our attention.

Gave me goosebumps in my veins

This is the most stunningly original recording I have heard in a long time. I am KICKING myself that I missed these guys when they visited my town a month ago!! Walking to work last week, I listened to "Steamroller" over and over and over on my Ipod--the layers of ominous, pulsing vocal rhythms, and rushing water guitar and percussion are hypnotic, compelling, and kind of unnerving. There is something African, Appalachian, Anarchist going on here. It is thrilling music.
