iTunes Review

The spare, dramatic work on All Days Are Nights is a mixed bag of sorts, though the sonics and somber mood never waver. Moving away from the lush orchestration of Release the Stars, the tunes here are built on nothing more than piano and Wainwright’s passionate tenor. His methods vary from borrowing Shakespearean sonnets to incorporating an aria—"Les feux d'artifice t'appellent"—from Wainwright’s own 2009 opera, Prima Donna. Wainwright wrote this material during the long struggle of his mother (musician Kate McGarrigle) with cancer, and the record came together in the wake of her January 2010 death. A dark, mournful tone permeates, though Wainwright is mourning more than his mother’s passing. He muses on bad romance and “repressed cads” on “Sad with What I Have” and “What Would I Ever Do with a Rose?” and examines unfulfilled desires on “The Dream.” The deep sadness and pain of loss is palpable as he sings to his sister in “Martha” and on the tender “Zebulon.” And the sonnets—originally for a 2009 stage production in Berlin—are achingly beautiful things.

"I’m in love but let’s not talk about it"

For as long as I can remember, I have been hoping that at some point Rufus Wainwright would sit down with just his voice and a single instrument (be it piano or guitar) and give his fans an album full of songs as simple and beautiful as "Poses" and the rendition of his dad's "One Man Guy" from second album Poses. He's delivered just that with All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu, a record as dark and as haunting as Wainwright's heavily shadowed eye staring out from the album cover at me; an eye that seems to peer through to my soul, saying, "be careful what you wish for, because some day, you just might get it."

Pure

I've been an unwavering Rufus Wainwright fan for a while now, and I've had the pleasure of seeing him live a few times. One of the greatest parts about seeing him in person is when he plays songs on just the piano. This album captures the pure sound and energy of his live performances, yet it is refined and polished like other albums of his. The music is very well written, and I constantly find myself realizing that it's only a piano and his voice. This is probably his most emotional album to date - every song drips with introspection and feeling. Bravo!

Roses for the Diva!!!!!

His most personal, complex and captivating work to date. Who would have thought that a chemical-free Rufie would create such an intoxicatingly intimate and sophisticated musical high. Well, we did!
From the slightly frenzied 'toe-shoes up the subway steps' opening chords of 'Who are you New York?', to Zebulon accepting its final breath before dawn-all days are in fact nights… spatially rich tonal shades of musical and lyrical greys, floating upon a new darkness in a remarkably significant voice.
