iTunes Review

Arcade Fire’s debut release — this 7-song, 33-minute self-titled EP — already displays many of the elements that would make them a genuine musical sensation in the new century. Released in 2003 and re-released in 2005 after the unexpected success of their 2004 debut album, Funeral, Arcade Fire is a walk (or run) through a carnival funhouse of pop music. The vocals chase down the neuroses stalking Talking Heads’ David Byrne, while the music flirts with roller-rink keyboards and the anthemic echo canyons of ‘80s U2. Yet, for all the traceable influences, there’s a defiant, solitary sound unearthed in the uneasy joy of “Old Flame” and the discordant X-like harmonies of “I’m Sleeping In a Submarine.” Hints of Prefab Sprout at their most spirited channels through the six-minute accordion-accompanied “No Cars Go” where the male-female vocal face-off comes to a convincing head. “The Woodlands National Anthem” chirps like a river nymph leading a frat party. “My Heart Is An Apple” is what happens when Neil Young is confused with David Byrne, things drift to the bottom and build their way back to the surface.

Greatest EP I Have Ever Bought

As the title of this review states, this is the greatest Ep I have bought. I listen to these tracks almost as much as those on Funeral and am very impressed with the Arcade Fire's continued talents. Win Butler is definatly the greatest Canadian musicial of our time and this EP is just further proof. The songs are clearly of an inferiour caliber to the powerful performances on Funeral, but they are definatly the next best thing. Old Flame: The accordion makes this track shine. 5* I'm Sleeping In a Submarine: The little piano bit always tickles my fancy. 4* No Cars Go: The best track. Prime Arcade Fire with an incredible percussion kicker. Buy it. 5* The Woodlands National Anthem: A calm track. Very layed back by comparison. 4* My Heart Is an Apple: Pretty damn good. 4* Headlights Look Like Diamonds: A great song. Very nice. 5* Vampire Forest Fire: A nice song...kinda weird at times, but great. 5* If you are an Arcade Fire fan and are interested in their other work besides Funeral, listen to some of these tracks. Old Flame and No Cars Go are ideal to their sound and make you appreciate Regine's accordion abilities that much more. Arcade Fire is a band that will never fail to impress me. I hope, with their next effort, that will never change. P.S.: Buy Cold Wind off of the Six Feet Under: Everything Ends soundtrack. It is a brilliant song.

Debut Magic!!!

This pre-big-name album for the Arcade Fire is one of the best things to come out of Montreal. The unique beats in Woodlands take you for a ride you won't forget. The combined female/male vocals that twist and build are so incredible. For any fan of the Arcade Fire, this is a must hear!

Barely points the way

Not in the same league as their sophomore effort, Arcade Fire's debut EP is nonetheless a fun time with a glimmer of the greatness that would follow. Win Butler seems tentative and unsure if wacky was acceptable for mass consumption in 2003. If you're a completist, start with Funeral and work backwards.

Biography

Formed: June, 2003 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A combination of indie rock muscle and theatrical, unapologetic bombast turned Arcade Fire into indie royalty in the early 2000s. Originally comprised of Régine Chassagne, Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and brothers William and Win Butler, the group formed during the summer of 2003, after Win spotted Chassagne singing jazz standards at a Montreal art exhibit. The grandson of famed swing-era bandleader Alvino Rey, Win was quickly charmed by Chassagne's performance, leading the two to launch a songwriting...
