Album Review
Judging from the songs on Kathleen Edwards' sophomore album, Back to Me, this is one gal who's had some unpleasant run-ins with Cupid over the years, and she's not afraid to talk about 'em. Back to Me comes charging out of the gate with "In State," in which a woman spits with no small amount of venom that she's glad her outlaw boyfriend has been sent up the river for 20 years, and the album doesn't get a whole lot more optimistic about affairs of the heart as it goes along. But Back to Me never comes off as bitter for its own sake — sounding as if it were recorded under the influence of warm bourbon and a gray sky, the album is long on plain-spoken emotions and tough-talking guitars, but there's a fragile undertow beneath Edwards' flinty veneer that often rises to the surface, and the album's frequent bouts with bad karma are leavened by songs such as the sadly nostalgic "Pink Emerson Radio," the heartbreak of "Old Times Sake," and the title cut, in which Edwards shows her man she can give as good as she gets. Edwards' songs are well served by producer and guitarist Colin Cripps, and her road band gives the music plenty of rich sonic detail (and guest musicians Benmont Tench and Eric Heywood lend a valuable assist). Back to Me is a powerful and affecting album from an artist who is quickly establishing herself as a major talent.

Come back to us Kathleen
Haven't fallen this hard since Mermaid Avenue or my first Tom Waites album. I fell first then hubby did too, and we don't have exactly the same taste in music, although we do share the blues. If The Stones think she's cool, that raises my opinion of them. Every song a gem of melancholy, regret, alientation, anger or wistfulness, with a good story to boot, sung in a plain unpretentious voice, with just the right, minimal balance of guitar and other voices. If a twangy guitar with accordion and air make you feel the lonely prairie and wonder what's happened to your life, then get this album and make your Sunday the most melancholy ever. And only her second album ... come back to us for more Kathleen.
Look No Further
For month's now I've been trying to find something, anything that speaks to me. After discovering Kathleen Edwards, my search is over. I have a strong background in "alternative" music, not necessarily "folk" as some might describe her music. However, labels, as always are way too restrictive. This album has the lyrics and raw emotional impact of any master at their creative peak, and her career is only beginning. She reminded me that many of my recent "favourites" sounded great, but lacked the personal punch to sustain them for the long haul. If you find pensive, introspective music to be an uplifting influence in your life (those of you that do will know what I mean), do not pass this opportunity by. If you're even remotely hesitant, check out "In State", "Somewhere Else" and especially "Away"
one of the best.
kathleen manages to pull it off again...this record accomplishes everything "failer" (her 2003 debut release) did, and more. i find the songwriting definitely has matured, and the record takes a more rocky approach, as opposed to an acoustic alt country side. although i purchased my record when it first hit the stores, i still listen to it day in and day out...and i can't get enough of kathleen. i love playing her songs on the guitar, i love listening to her records in my car, and i love everything about her...she's just such an amazing talent. this, folks...is a record worthwhile. i just can't wait for her new record to hit shelves either, look for it early 2008...it's called "asking for flowers," and i'm sure she'll hold up to her rep....cheers!
