Album Review

Gungor's second release on the Brash label is a departure that shows exceptional growth for the worship team. The group employs the same passion that became the life of Ancient Skies, but comparisons to their national debut reveal a more authentic and versatile approach. Gungor sound like anything but corporate worship. On the first four tracks alone, the album travels from pensive acoustic praise ("Dry Bones" and the title track) to toe-tapping congregational rock ("Brighter Day") all the way to a funky urban groove ("Heaven") with guest vocalist Israel Houghton leading the jam. The band's varied takes on modern worship are much lauded and welcomed steps in the right direction. The bells-and-strings intro on "The Earth Is Yours" gives way to a singalong chorus that recalls the best parts of Brandon Heath and Shane & Shane. At first listen, Gungor's eclectic approach seems to keep the album from having a cohesive flow, but repeated listens eventual yield an underlying theme both musically and lyrically that gives it unexpected depth. With the group's natural passion, it's easy for listeners to relish in the heart of each song, making Beautiful Things a worthwhile worship experience.

The music is incredible, the live experience is out of this world

I had the privilege of being a part of the "Beautiful Things" live experience with Gungor before this CD was released and was left speechless. This album is passionate, honest, full of truth and devotion but is really only a piece of the finished puzzle.

Buy this CD, support these artists and enjoy the songs. If you get the chance to attend a "Beautiful Things" event live, do it! You will NOT be disappointed.

Inspired, sophisticated, and unpretentious.

The album title refers to the beautiful things that God does, but in a way it is unassumingly self-referential; this is a truly stunning album. Lyrically, it is a celebration of many central and tender tensions in the Christian faith. The vision of this album seems equally inspired by the beauty of God’s works and the realization that there is yet much restoration to take place. Doubt, faith, joy and solemnity are all given their due as the listener makes his or her way through the tracklist. The heart and mind come away nourished.
The album begins with “Dry Bones” and in great anticipation; the music holds back to match the lyrics perfectly. Then a major cadence is introduced and a torrent of statements of faith bubble forth: “only you can raise the dead, can lift my head up / Jesus, you’re the one who save us, constantly creates us into something new / Jesus, surely you will find us, surely you’re messiah, you’ll make all things new / Life is breaking out”.
The album unfolds some of their realizations of God’s infinite scope, his love, and his works. Though containing many moments of driven intensity, the latter part of the album, recorded in a rural Rocky Mountain setting, brings about a set of hushed and almost minimalist alt-folk tunes. This "folk and much more" vein runs deep throughout the album but is fleshed out in the earlier songs with a more jubilant sound, especially in gospel-blues track “Heaven”. Therefore this quiescent turn is powerful. “Please Be My Strength” and “Higher” are weighty and richly psalteric.
This album is highly enjoyable; it's truly Christian music at its finest. Innovative and hearty, Gungor employ a multiplicity of styles and master them. What Gungor presents to their listeners with this release is an album that is sophisticated but unpretentious; deeply refreshing in many ways and reflective with meditation upon many key Biblical tenets. What it expresses is the band’s blossoming understanding of a grander and grander loving God and it dares the listener to allow God to open their mind too.

Gorgeous and meaningful album

First off, this album is gorgeous, lyrically, instrumentally and the way you can really feel God through the band and their music. I haven't heard a band like this and I found this music to be very refreshing from your typical "worship music." There is nothing wrong with it at all don't get me wrong but finding a band like this makes you appreciate when a band does things with a different approach in mind. I stumbled across them one day and got intrigued and ended up buying their whole album which is quality from start to finish. I really enjoyed "Higher" and "Call me Out" because they spoke to me but buy the whole album - you will not be disappointed!
