Album Review
Revitalized by their 2008 reunion, the Black Crowes decided to take a genuine risk, recording a double-album's worth of new material in front of a live audience at Levon Helm's barn in upstate New York...and then release the second half, Until the Freeze, as a free download-only. To a certain extent, such formal experiments are where the Crowes can really stretch, as they're so devoted to rock & roll roots from Southern England to South Georgia, they can't add new wrinkles to old traditions. But that's not exactly right: they're willing to stretch until at least the late '70s, offering their spin on a Rolling Stones' disco on the album's first single, "I Ain't Hiding." As true as that may be, it's too snide and easy, and does a disservice to what the Crowes pull off with aplomb on this rather remarkable record, a record that has all the easy interplay of a road-tested band but none of the weariness. The Crowes play with muscle and grace, easing into the rustic ramble of "Appaloosa" or getting dirt underneath their fingernails on the stupendous opener "Good Morning Captain," a song that sets the keynote for the rest of the record both in its sturdy construction and enthusiastically ragged performance. More than anything, it's the kineticism that captivates, how the band deepens their already-strong songs with muscle and blood, sounding alive in a way that they never quite have in the studio. No longer young upstarts, they wear their years proudly on this terrific album, sounding like the veteran roadhounds they've always aspired to be.
Customer Reviews
The Crowes' White Album (or Exile)
This album is epic, and it feels like the band isn't so in to being a great rock band, but just a great BAND. The Levon et al. influence is well represented, especially in the rockin' openener, Good morning Captian. Their best song in years. Until the second song. The musicianship is so top notch, I find myself taken aback at times. So hard rockin, so crisp, and with a drive that makes you want to move (which is what music is supposed to do, right?). Admittedly, I still have to get familiar with the 20 tracks-( it's a double disc!), but there is a lot of really great music on these Albums. A masterpiece as concept albums go- especially considering the audience applause you get. I find I like the audience, but don't notice it's there during songs. (For another stellar example of this, see Gillian Welch and David Rawlings do My Dear Someone and I Wanna Sing that Rock n Roll from the Down From The Mountain concert album). Chris sounds phenomenal, and as front men goes- is right at the top. He's in peak form rocking and slowing it down to a mellower groove as well- something the Crowes have done to perfection on Wiser Time and Thorn in My Side in the past. Their early commercial success afforded them the time to keep making albums, touring & playing and finding their sound and direction. Nearly 20 years later, they've connected with a roots of Rock & Roll by recording at Levon's Barn in Woodstock, no less. I can only imagine what a blast it would have been to be around for those sessions, with those musicians in that part of the world. The Catskills and Upstate New York is some of the most beautiful nature in the world, and clearly the changing seasons and surroundings created an atmosphere that was both inspirational and productive. Is it their White Album, their Exile, their Stadium Arcadium? Yes. This is an album I look forward to getting really familiar with over the years. It has that kind of depth, variety and infectious rhythm that I think will rank it as one of their best, and remain a high standard for conceptual double albums can strive to be. I
Amazing Follow-Up on Warpaint
Dont listen to the other reviewer. If your into Blues-Rock I recommend this album. I love the feel of the album, since adding Luther Dickinson on guitar these guys have only gotten better.
ROAD TRIP PERFECTION
I'm speechless. What is Home is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard... EVER. Good Morning Captain, I Ain't Hiding, Garden Gate and Greenhorn are other highlights. I listened to this album for the first time driving through the mountains from Calgary to Vancouver. It was made for that journey.
