iTunes Review

Bon Iver (a.k.a. Justin Vernon) made a big, unexpected splash in 2008 with From Emma, Forever Ago, a gorgeous backwoods acoustic gem with real emotional power. The first three songs on Blood Bank would have fit on From Emma, which is a compliment, yet this is much more than a brief set of outtakes (in fact, they were recorded at a different time). There are certainly similarities to his debut, but only in that it features many of the same elements that made the first release so impressive — moving melodies, gentle guitar, and that stunning, and usually multi-tracked, falsetto. “Woods” is the odd man out here, and it’s a risk that works. On it, he uses a digital effect on his voice and then proceeds to add layer after layer of synthesized vocal harmonies until it builds into something cinematic and strangely beautiful. It may not become everyone’s favorite cut, but it’s a worthy and refreshing experiment that’s different from anything else he’s done thus far. Blood Bank fully stands on its own merits, and it’s to his credit that it sounds like a distinct piece of work rather than extension of another one.

Woods is good; welcome to Post-Folk

So, it seems as though everyone either a) doesn't like autotune, or b) thinks the song would be better without it. Peronally, I think its as solid, or more solid than any of the other 3. If you hate autotune (which I don't simply because I haven't had much exposure to it; I don't really listen to a lot of music that employs it), you're a lost cause for this song from the beginning. Second, if you think this song is ruined by autotune, and would be better without, I would vehemently disagree. Autotune is the whole point of this song. Its slow and completely wide open, allowing us to appreiciate the interesting combo of Justin + autotune; without it this song would not work at all. I guess I just found it easier to embrace than most others on here.. On another note, I like how many of these tracks, Woods included, veer away from traditional songwriting frameworks, and instead involve a lot of slow builds, dynamics, etc. Post-Folk, in a sense, I guess.

Great Album

This Is not For Emma. I know people are going to pigeon hole Bon Iver into that one sound and if he ever dares stray from it, then it atomatically is not as good. Give him some creative leneancy and take the album for what it is, brilliant. The first two tracks could easily be on For Emma, and are amazing for it, the next to are a little more ambitious. From "Babys", with it's prickling piano, to "Woods", a haunting track feature a riduculous amount of over dubs, an auto tune, and Bon Iver's voice. The idea on paper sounds pretty lame, but by the time he's finished his final "slow down the time" the last thing on anyones mind is lame.

Not Sold.

Howevermuch I enjoyed "Blood Bank" and "Beach Baby", "Babys" and "Woods" did not follow in suit. This EP was on MTV News today for "quality, not quantity" and I have to disagree. I really did not like "Woods" and hope that in the future he does not use anymore voice distortion.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Justin Vernon began recording under the nom de band Bon Iver following the breakup of DeYarmond Edison, an indie folk group similar in tone and manner to Iron & Wine, Little Wings, and — to a certain extent — Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Vernon's solo project took DeYarmond Edison's introspective, folky sound and embellished it with squinchy, quirky orchestral touches that nodded to Sparklehorse and the drifty optimism of the Flaming Lips. Vernon moved back to Wisconsin the winter following...
