iTunes Review

Broken Bells are James Mercer of the Shins and Danger Mouse (Brian Burton), who is half of Gnarls Barkley and the producer on albums by Gorillaz, the Black Keys, Beck and others. Mercer’s dreamy melodies and memorable hooks meld organically with Danger’s Mouse spacey soundscapes and elastic tempos. Burton sets Mercer’s soothing, melancholic voice against dynamic beats and lush backdrops that add power and punch to these carefully structured songs. “Vaporize” begins like a classic Shins tune before morphing into an organ-driven groove. “The Ghost Inside” features Mercer singing in a strained yet pleasing falsetto over a funky, skittering synth beat. There are straight-forward gems such as “The High Road” and “Trap Doors” as well as atmospheric beauties like the gurgling “Your Head Is On Fire,” the tense and wiry “Citizen,” and the ingeniously constructed “Sailing to Nowhere.” Flush with surprises and brilliant sonic touches, Broken Bells is an inspired collaboration that should please fans of the Shins and Danger Mouse alike.

I'll say it again: Surprisingly Good

The best albums, in my opinion, don't always come from today's top artists. They come from relatively unknown bands that really do pack a powerful punch, but haven't been given the grace of the social spotlight or any media attention. Broken Bells really know what their doing on the terms of producing great music that strikes you as different, but pulls you in due to it's entrancing, mellow, and hypnotic sound. I first noticed that this band was fairly clever with their lyrics, and they carried it on to their album, proving that they would not be content with being famous for one single, but instead, proved that they wanted to strive for their personal perfection meanwhile not losing sight of what being a true artist means. Most of their tracks reminds me a fair amount of Sam Robert's softer tunes such as Mystified, Heavy; Bridge to Nowhere; Lions of the Kalahari, and Love at The End of The World. Great.

Finally another good album!!!

There are so many bad artists these days, and so many bad collaborations that it really saturates the music market and makes it difficult for good music to be heard anymore!! I was surprised when I heard this album. To me it almost has a new 'Verve' type feel to it, and that's a really good thing. I started off buying 'October' and realized I needed the whole album. I wasn't disappointed. Some parts of the album I didn't like at first but then the song transformed into something beautiful!!

Amazing

This album has a lot of substance and talent. I can't get enough of it. I greatly recommend it if especially if your a fan of the Shins or bands in the same genre. The high road and October are my favourite tracks.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Though Broken Bells featured two of the bigger names in indie and alternative music — the Shins’ singer/guitarist James Mercer and producer/multi-instrumentalist Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse — the duo managed to keep their project secret for a relatively long time. The pair were inspired to collaborate when they met at 2004’s Roskilde music festival in Denmark, where they discovered they were fans of each others’ work. However, they didn’t start writing and recording together as a band...
