Hole: Celebrity Skin

One of the most enjoyable things about Hole's work is that it change sso drastically from album to album. Celebrity Skins takes on a more polished sound that remains just as powerful as their previosu work. Celebrity Skin also feature's "Boys on the Radio", which evolved from "Sugar Coma" which was sang live in the early-mid nineties. It's a great example of the band's growth as artists. Another must-have, pick it up!

A truly incredible album

I personally wouldn't rate it 5 stars, but more like 4 and a half. The album comes out as a polished, more pop sound than their previous albums. It's not very angry, other than "Playing Your Song," when Love unleashes her inner riot grrl once again. Almost every single song is a great one. The incredibly moving, uplifting, even beautiful "Boys on the Radio" is the best song Love will ever write and the best song Hole has ever recorded. The gorgeous ballad "Malibu" pairs with it perfectly: it's a song so beautiful you'd never think a grunge band recorded and wrote it. Other highlights including the title track, the dark, acoustic and howling "Northern Star," and "Dying," a pop ballad that almost sounds electronic. Most of the album has the theme of celebrity in California, with the title track, "Awful" and "Reasons to Be Beautiful" getting the obvious out of the way. In the latter, Love sings "Miles and miles of perfect skin/I swear I do, I fit right in." With an album this good, the troubled Love will have no problem fitting in the celebrity haze of California.

One of my top ten albums...

Many a night listening to this with the headphones cranked up way too loud, screaming—um, I mean singing along to practically every track on this 90's gem.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '10s

Throughout Hole's career, vocalist/guitarist Courtney Love's notorious public image has overshadowed her band's music. In their original incarnation, Hole was one of the noisiest, most abrasive alternative bands performing in the early '90s. By the time of their second album, 1994's Live Through This, the band had smoothed out many of their rougher edges, also adding more melodies and hooks to their songwriting. Through both versions of Hole, Love's combative, assaultive persona permeated the group's...
