Before Warp codified the sound of IDM, the label was ground zero for a punchy style called Sheffield bleep, in which acid house’s stripped-down minimalism met a rowdy UK rave sensibility. Tricky Disco’s “Tricky Disco” lays out the genre’s giddy pleasures in one-finger synth riffs and sped-up James Brown samples; Sweet Exorcist’s “Testone,” by Cabaret Voltaire’s Richard H. Kirk, is all chilly sine-wave chirps and 808 cowbell. And that’s techno icon Richie Hawtin lurking behind his F.U.S.E. alias, on the closing collab with LFO, a cascade of chord stabs and rushing snares.
