Album Review
Fourteen years after their first self-titled album, Collective Soul deliver another in 2009 and it's fair to say that the album is a bit of a reintroduction, not a reinvention. It's also fair to ask who Collective Soul is reintroducing themselves to, and the answer is pretty simple: after spending the better part of the decade in the indie leagues, the band is returning to the majors with 2009's Collective Soul, making a pitch at reconnecting with the wide mainstream audience they had a decade ago. The group doesn't ignore what it's done over the last ten years — there's a pronounced Bowie influence that still lingers — first aired on the glam-tastic Youth — especially on "Fuzzy," but this is high-gloss, high-octane arena rock, filled with big riffs and hooks on both the rockers and power ballads. Collective Soul doesn't make an attempt to modernize their sound (although the verse of "Understanding" has an unmistakable phrase borrowed from Jack White) choosing instead to refine their best techniques, so this winds up being a very big, very hooky modern rock record that might not find the audience it once did but only because of the shifting landscape of modern rock. As a record, this is as strong as anything Collective Soul have ever done.

Remarkable
For me, 5 star praise is hard to dish out...and is usually reserved for the classics like Marley's Exodus album or Boston's first album. Most of the drivel cranked out these days is trite, predictable and typically (and thankfully) ends up on the floor of the car in a heap along with fast food wrappers, only to be sold for a quarter at a garage sale near you. Not so with the CS album. It's very very good. All songs are interesting and varied. The songs are better than the small cut sample they give you on itunes. For example "Understanding" has 3 wonderful changes of tempo: moving from a slow rock verse, to a new wave chorus and wrapping up with a delicious finish which can only remind the listener of some of Pink Floyds best work. Excellent hooks and sing along choruses throughout the album make this CD a real keeper. And finally, pay the extra for the bonus track version as the three additional songs are all good, with Heart to Heart being one of CS's best ever.
Some of their best work yet!
I've been a fan of Collective Soul since "Shine" owned the radio waves in 1994, and this new album could potentially go down in history as one of their greatest. You've never heard a song quite like "Fuzzy" before, and as different as it sounds on the first play, you'll be singing and whistling along by the third run. They return to their roots for the song titled "Dig", a sure hit when they release it as a single. I love the lyrics in "Understanding" and "She Does", and one can only get the feeling that Ed Roland is feeling the creative vibes. My only complaint, "Heart to Heart" should have been on the regular release album and not the bonus track addition. "Heart to Heart" is the most powerful song I've heard from Collective Soul since "The World I know." This song should be heard by all, regardless of the album they choose to buy. Unfortunately those who purchase the regular album are missing out on something very special. Otherwise, a fantastic and needed effort from Collective Soul. Make sure you pick it up, you won't be decided.
good... but could be better...
I think Collective Soul peaked with Dosage. They went downhill with the next 2 releases, managing to pick it up a notch with "Afterwords" and now they raised slightly from the previous release. "Fuzzy" sounds like they were drunk (which is maybe the idea they wanted to get across) but this song is a sure skip for me, it just doesn't sound good. Songs like the passionate "You", "Staring Down", "She Does", "Love", "Hymn for My Father", and the bonus track "Heart to Heart" save the album from yet another "Blender" album. This is good for the hardcore CS fan, but falls short for those looking for a Dosage type release.
