iTunes Review
On MGMT’s hugely successful debut, Oracular Spectacular, they declared, “This is our decision, to live fast and to die young.” Luckily they stuck around long enough to produce another deeply satisfying full-length work, one that feels even more expansive, and dare we say more mature than Oracular — and we mean that only in the best way possible. Rather than stuffing it full of easily digested pop baubles, Congratulations brims and bristles with over-the-top prog-rock and psychedelic space oddities (with both of those genres responsible for the audacious “Siberian Breaks”). There are insightful musings on their own success (“Flash Delirium,” “Congratulations”), and loving musical tributes (“Song for Dan Treacy” effectively conjures the troubled Treacy and his work with the Television Personalities; “Brian Eno” is a pinwheeling nod to the great musician, with a slight Bowie flavor). Recorded with Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, and again with Dave Fridmann at the mixing helm, this work — from clever arrangements to the pointed lyrics — is a stellar step in MGMT’s bold career. Congratulations, all around.
Customer Reviews
Congratulations MGMT, it's working.
I know there was a lot of negative speculation and doubt, even on the behalf of the band themselves, surrounding MGMT's sophomore effort, however after giving Congratulations a few thorough listenings, I don't think the boys have anything to worry about.
To start off, I'll acknowledge some of what may be the album's weaknesses. As stated by the band several months back, Congratulations isn't a "singles" album. Compared to their previous efforts, Congratulations certainly is nowhere as mainstream as Oracular Spectacular or even Time to Pretend EP. In other words, if the only songs you listened to on the first full length MGMT album were "Kids" and "Time to Pretend", perhaps this may not be exactly the album for you.
However this brings me right into praising the album. The beauty in MGMT's music isn't its instant popularity or accessibility, its the layers of psychedelia waiting to be unearthed and explored. I've been listening to this album for about 3 weeks, since it leaked. I'll admit, on the first listen, I wasn't blown away. But think back to when you first heard Oracular Spectacular - it was unfamiliar, twisted and plain bizarre. However just like with their first album, after just a few listens Congratulations grows on you, and before you know it you're engulfed completely by the trance of MGMT. Once you give the album a chance, you'll see the musical and creative genius behind nearly every track.
For quick, catch tracks, try "Someone's Missing" and especially "Brian Eno". Other highlights include the first single, which once again I first received with very mixed feelings, but has grown on me strongly, "Flash Delirium", and the 12-minute psychedelic epic "Siberian Breaks". However once you get into it, every track on this album is great in its own way, and at least for me, they begin to blend together as I listen to the album on repeat and become immersed in something truly unkind any other music being produced today.
If you were a die-hard fan of their previous work, you have no reason not to obtain every track on MGMT's second studio album. If you're new to the band, there has never been better time to join the 'trip' than now. However if you're chasing a "Kids" replica and aren't willing to give the whole album a chance, you might just want to look elsewhere.
Keep up the good work MGMT!
Give it some time....
This album may come to a shock to some fans, but I'm sure with time it will grow on you.
Some of the must hear tracks are It's Working, Someone's Missing, Brian Eno and Congratulations.
Too Bad
After the surprising rave reviews over their first album, Oracular Spectacular, it appears that whatever this alternative psychedelic rock band has lost what they once had. This album sounds very choppy, unorganized, cluttered, and the biggest thing is that it doesn't flow at all. The bands' musical idea sounds lost in it, and a good band always puts their most effort into showing their talent by smart song writing and ideal lyrics that are relevant and true.
