Good for a quiet evening

This live recording comes from a concert which was broadcast on CBC radio on Christmas night a few years back. I enjoyed it when I heard it on the radio and was delighted to find that it had been released as an album. The songs are mostly quieter selections, with a good mix of well-known (White Christmas, Silent Night) and lesser-known (What is this Fragrance) material, and a few original songs by the performers. It's a nice choice for a quiet evening by the Christmas tree.

4 out of 5 (singers)

Rebecca, Mary, Victoria and Jane are absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately Holly Cole is the most contrived feelingless singer on this collection. (brassy, perfectly pitched vocals without a heart- done to death) MM Ohara and Victoria are utterly stunning- Siberry is enchanting, but I found Jenkins to be the most dynamic singer of them all. A must listen.

Tender renditions, capturing human frailty and feeling

I bought two of the older tracks on this album after hearing them today on CBC radio: Mary Margaret O'Hara leading on What is this Fragrance? and In the Bleak Midwinter. Both are antique carols I've enjoyed in more austere choral versions sung by perfect classical voices. What makes these versions special is their emotional tenderness, reaching for and attaining a seasonal sense of awe, blessedness and maternal love. The sound reminds me of the McGarrigle sisters and their fine Christmas music but this one-time grouping has its own feminine cast, quite special.
